Days of the week in nihongo

Days of the week in nihongo are 日曜日, 月曜日, 火曜日, 水曜日, 木曜日, 金曜日, and 土曜日. Nihongo is the Japanese language; those seven words are the weekday names in it.

how many week days in the year

Nihongo still counts a year in dates, not in vocabulary. 365 dates make 52 weeks plus one leftover. 366 dates make 52 weeks plus two. The leftover dates are extra copies of whatever weekdays they fall on. Monday through Friday therefore appear 260, 261, or 262 times. Saturday and Sunday are days of the week in nihongo too; they are simply not in that five-day count.

For the civil year 2026, the leftover is Thursday, because the year is 365 days long and 1 January is Thursday. The year therefore holds 53 Thursdays. Add the five weekday names across 2026 and the total is 261. Saying the names in nihongo does not move 1 January. It only changes the word you write in the Thursday column: 木曜日.

If someone asks the question in English and wants the answer in nihongo, give both layers: the tally for the year, then the seven words. If they only wanted the words, skip the leftover arithmetic. Mixing “how many” with “what are they called” is how a student memorizes 261 as if it were a seventh name.

年 — the year you are counting, named. 平日 — Monday through Friday in ordinary talk. 週末 — Saturday and Sunday as a pair. 曜日 — the suffix on each of the seven names.

The seven words, as nihongo actually writes them

Read them as Japanese words, not as English days with stickers: 日曜日 にちようび nichiyōbi 月曜日 げつようび getsuyōbi 火曜日 かようび kayōbi 水曜日 すいようび suiyōbi 木曜日 もくようび mokuyōbi 金曜日 きんようび kin'yōbi 土曜日 どようび doyōbi The long vowel in yō is part of the word. Clipping it to “yobi” in your ear is how two cards sound identical until the kanji are in front of you. Pitch and vowel length matter more than an English-style stress. You do not need a linguistics lecture to use the names; you do need to hear the long よ.

On a form, the tiny column may show only 日 or 木. That is still the same word, shortened to the element. 木 on Thursday is “wood,” not a tree you plant that morning. 金 on Friday is “metal/gold,” not a pay-day joke the language requires, even if English speakers enjoy the coincidence with payday Friday.

Nihongo names the day. The leftover date still decides how many copies of that day the year owns.

Particles, this week, and next week

今週 means this week. 来週 means next week. 先週 means last week. Those three sit around the yōbi words when you make a plan: 来週の水曜日, next week’s Wednesday. 今日, today, and 明日, tomorrow, are often enough without a weekday if the listener already knows the date. When the date is the point, put the yōbi in.

The particle に marks “on” a weekday: 土曜日に会いましょう, let’s meet on Saturday. は can mark the day as the topic: 月曜日は忙しい, Mondays are busy. You do not need an extra word for “on” once に is there. Translating every English “on Monday” as a long prepositional phrase is how the sentence bloats and still sounds like English.

A year-count question in nihongo is still a calendar question. 今年の平日は何日, how many weekdays this year, wants the leftover arithmetic, not a new noun. Answer with the year, the length, and then 261 or whichever total that year holds. The seven names stay the seven names whether the year is common or leap.

Questions and answers

What does nihongo call Thursday?
木曜日, mokuyōbi. The first character is wood. The suffix 曜日 marks it as a weekday name.
How do I say “on Friday”?
金曜日に. The particle に does the work that “on” does in English.
Is 週末 one of the seven yōbi words?
No. It means the weekend as a pair. The seven names remain the seven yōbi words.
