Days of the week in japan

Days of the week in Japan are the same seven civil days, written in Japanese from the sun, the moon, and the five elements. Sunday through Saturday each take a name that ends in yōbi.

how many week days in the year

A common year has 365 dates, which is 52 weeks plus one leftover date. Fifty-two weeks already contain 260 Monday-to-Friday weekdays. The leftover date adds one more weekday if it falls Monday through Friday, so a 365-day year has 260 or 261 of those. A leap year has 366 dates, 52 weeks plus two leftovers, so the Monday-to-Friday count can be 260, 261, or 262. There is no single tally that fits every year.

2026 is a common year. 1 January 2026 is a Thursday, so the leftover date is a Thursday and the year contains 53 Thursdays and 52 of each other named day. Count Monday through Friday in 2026 and you get 261 weekdays. 2027 is also a common year; it begins on Friday, so Friday is the name that appears 53 times.

Japan uses that same Gregorian pile of dates. The Japanese labels do not add an eighth weekday, and they do not delete Saturday. If you meant “how many office days after public holidays,” that is a later filter: subtract the closures that actually apply, after you have the weekday count. A red date on a Japanese calendar is still a weekday or a weekend day. Closing a counter does not erase kayōbi from the week.

Seven named days every year; none go missing. Monday–Friday weekdays: 260, 261, or 262 dates, depending on the year. 2026: 261 of those, with Thursday as the extra named day.

Japan days of the week on a real grid

Japan days of the week, in the usual Sunday-to-Saturday order printed on many consumer calendars, are nichiyōbi, getsuyōbi, kayōbi, suiyōbi, mokuyōbi, kin'yōbi, and doyōbi. The kanji heads are 日, 月, 火, 水, 木, 金, and 土: sun, moon, fire, water, wood, metal, and earth. Those seven heads are what you see in a tiny column of a Japanese planner. The long forms add 曜日, yōbi, “day of the week.”

Many wall calendars in Japan put Sunday in the first column. ISO weeks and many business planners put Monday first. The names do not move when the starting column moves. Only the grid moves. If you are filling a bilingual diary, pick one start-of-week rule and keep it. Mixing a Sunday-first Japanese sheet with a Monday-first English sheet is how a meeting lands on the wrong morning.

Write the seven heads: 日 月 火 水 木 金 土. Decide whether the leftmost column is Sunday or Monday. Place 日 in the Sunday column, not in whichever cell is leftmost. Read one local calendar from the place you will actually use.

Weekend language follows the split you already know: doyōbi and nichiyōbi are Saturday and Sunday. Getsuyōbi through kin'yōbi are the ordinary weekday run in a Monday–Friday office. 平日, heijitsu, is the everyday word for those weekdays. 週末, shūmatsu, is the weekend. The English week did not change when the ink became kanji. Japan did not invent a fifth weekday. It wrote the same seven days in a different script.

Using the names in Japan, not only on a flashcard

A date line in Japanese can sit the weekday next to the month and day. The weekday is still one of the seven yōbi words. Public holidays in Japan are named dates, some fixed, some movable; they ride on top of the weekday. Golden Week in late April and early May is a cluster of those named dates plus the weekends that touch them. It is not a new weekday. It is several red squares in a short span.

Shops, trains, and government counters follow local hours on a given yōbi, and those hours often shrink on nichiyōbi. A timetable that says 平日 is telling you the weekday service, not the Sunday service. Read the legend. Do not copy a Monday train onto a Sunday morning and call it the same Japan.

If you only needed the year-count, you already have it: 52 weeks, then one or two leftovers, then the Monday–Friday filter. If you needed to read a Japanese calendar, you need the seven heads and the starting column. Both answers live on this page because the search asked for the days in Japan and the leftover arithmetic in the same breath.
