Days of the week in italiano
Days of the week in italiano are lunedì, martedì, mercoledì, giovedì, venerdì, sabato, and domenica. Italiano is Italian; those seven words are the weekday names.
how many week days in the year
Italiano still counts a year in dates, not in vocabulary. 365 dates make 52 weeks plus one leftover. 366 dates make 52 weeks plus two. The leftover dates are extra copies of whatever weekdays they fall on. Monday through Friday therefore appear 260, 261, or 262 times. Sabato and domenica are days of the week in italiano too; they are simply not in that five-day count.
For the civil year 2026, the leftover is Thursday, because the year is 365 days long and 1 January is Thursday. The year therefore holds 53 Thursdays. Add the five weekday names across 2026 and the total is 261. Saying the names in italiano does not move 1 January. It only changes the word you write in the Thursday column: giovedì.
If someone asks the question in English and wants the answer in italiano, give both layers: the tally for the year, then the seven words. If they only wanted the words, skip the leftover arithmetic. Mixing “how many” with “what are they called” is how a student memorises 261 as if it were an eighth name.
Write whether the year has 365 or 366 dates. Write the weekday of 1 January. The remainder after dividing the length by 7 is how many names get a 53rd visit. Those names start at 1 January and walk forward through the leftovers.
Articles, gender, and the lower-case habit
In italiano, lunedì, martedì, mercoledì, giovedì, venerdì, and sabato take the masculine article il when you need one: il lunedì. Domenica is feminine: la domenica. You will hear il lunedì for “on Mondays” as a habit, and lunedì with a date for a particular Monday. Oggi è domenica needs no article. Di lunedì can also mark a habitual Monday. You do not add an English-style capital to those common nouns in running italiano.
il lunedì, il martedì, il mercoledì, il giovedì, il venerdì, il sabato la domenica oggi è… plus the name settimana — the week; fine settimana — the weekend Abbreviations exist on planners. A learner is safer with the full word until the short forms on a local calendar are obvious. Do not invent English three-letter codes and expect an Italian diary to show “Thu.” The diary will print gio, g, or giovedì, depending on the grid. Match the card to the planner you will actually open.
Call it italiano and you are already inside the language. The seven names do not change if you arrived through the English word Italian.
Putting the names in a sentence
A date line often drops extra furniture: lunedì 3 settembre. Time of day can follow: martedì mattina, venerdì sera. Domani è sabato is “tomorrow is Saturday.” Ieri era giovedì is “yesterday was Thursday.” You do not need a long prepositional phrase for “on” once the article or the bare name is doing that work. Translating every English “on Monday” as a bulky extra clause is how the sentence still sounds like English.
A year-count question asked in italiano is still a calendar question. Quanti giorni feriali ci sono quest’anno wants the leftover arithmetic, not a new noun. Answer with the year, the length, and then 261 or whichever total that year holds. The seven names stay the seven names whether the year is common or leap. Leap Day is 29 febbraio with a weekday, not a spare domenica invented for rest.
Practice one order and keep it for the session: Monday first, which is how italiano lists usually run. If your English wall grid starts on Sunday, do not slide domenica into the leftmost column and then wonder why lunedì is “late.” The word did not move. Your first column did.
