Count Monday through Friday unless you meant all seven names. A common year has 365 dates, which is 52 weeks plus one leftover date. Fifty-two weeks already contain 260 weekdays. The leftover date adds one more weekday if it falls Monday through Friday, so a 365-day year has 260 or 261 of those. A leap year has 366 dates, 52 weeks plus two leftovers, so the Monday-to-Friday count can be 260, 261, or 262. There is no single tally that fits every year.

2026 is a common year. 1 January 2026 is a Thursday, so Thursday is the leftover name: 53 Thursdays, 52 of each other named day, and 261 Monday-to-Friday dates. The Italian labels do not add an eighth weekday and do not delete sabato. If you meant office days after public holidays, that is a later filter: subtract the closures that actually apply after you have the weekday count. A red date on an Italian calendar is still lunedì or domenica. Closing a counter does not erase the name.

How many week days in the year is not the same as how many days are in a week. A week has seven named days in the Italian language as in English. The year question is about how many of those dates, across twelve months, are Monday to Friday. Sabato and domenica are days of the week. They are not in that five-day count.

Words around the week

I giorni della settimana is “the days of the week.” Oggi è mercoledì is “today is Wednesday.” Che giorno è oggi? expects one of the seven words. Fine settimana is the weekend pair. Giorni feriali and giorni lavorativi are everyday ways to talk about working days; they are not extra weekday names. A leap year does not invent vocabulary. It only adds a 29 February with a weekday of its own.

Italian leaves lunedì in lower case until it starts the line. The day did not get smaller. The capital did not travel. Once the seven words are in your mouth, the year-count is arithmetic you already have: name the year, see whether February has 28 or 29 dates, see where 1 January sits, then add the leftover weekdays. The Italian language does not change in a leap year. Only the tally of Monday-to-Friday dates does.
