Days of the week in germany
Days of the week in Germany are the same seven Gregorian names, usually printed Monday first. German labels them Montag through Sonntag; the country does not add an eighth weekday.
how many week days in the year
How many week days in the year, counted in Germany, uses the same date pile as everywhere else on the Gregorian calendar. A common year has 365 dates: 52 weeks plus one leftover date. A leap year has 366: 52 weeks plus two. If weekday means Monday through Friday, those leftovers push the office total to 260, 261, or 262. Germany does not keep a private count. A red public holiday is still a named weekday; closing a shop does not erase Donnerstag from the week.
2026 is a common year. 1 January 2026 is a Thursday, so the leftover date is a Thursday and the year contains 53 Thursdays and 52 of each other named day. Count Monday through Friday in 2026 and you get 261 weekdays. That arithmetic is civil, not national. A German planner will still show 53 Donnerstage. A school holiday table is a later filter: subtract the closures that actually apply, after you have the weekday count.
Days of the week Germany searches that only wanted the words can skip the leftover math. Searches that wanted payroll days cannot skip it, and they also cannot skip the public-holiday list, which is a different list. Mixing those layers is how a tourist treats a feast day as a missing weekday. The name is still on the wall. The counter may be closed.
Seven named days every year; none go missing in Germany. Monday–Friday weekdays: 260, 261, or 262 dates, depending on the year. 2026: 261 of those, with Thursday as the extra named day. Public holidays ride on top of weekdays; they do not replace the names.
How the German week is laid out
Planners, ISO weeks, and most office calendars in Germany put Monday in the first column. Consumer grids that follow a Sunday-first import still exist, especially on imported templates. The names do not move when the starting column moves. Only the grid moves. If you are filling a bilingual diary, pick one start-of-week rule and keep it. Mixing a Sunday-first sheet with a Monday-first German sheet is how a meeting lands on the wrong morning.
The seven labels, Monday first, are Montag, Dienstag, Mittwoch, Donnerstag, Freitag, Samstag, Sonntag. Wochentag in a shop notice often means a working day, not “any of the seven.” A timetable that says an Werktagen is telling you the weekday service, which may exclude Sunday and sometimes Saturday, depending on the operator. Read the legend. Do not copy a Monday tram onto a Sunday morning and call it the same Germany.
Federal public holidays sit on named dates; some states add others. Those dates keep their weekday. A holiday on a Thursday does not turn Thursday into Saturday. It turns that Thursday into a closed counter for the places that observe it. Neighbouring states can disagree. The weekday name will not.
Samstag, Sonnabend, and the weekend
Saturday in Germany is Samstag in much of the country, and Sonnabend in parts of the north and east. Both are the sixth day of a Monday-first week, or the seventh of a Sunday-first grid. Das Wochenende is that day plus Sonntag. Sunday hours for shops are restricted by law in ways that surprise visitors from places with seven-day retail; the restriction is a rule about opening, not a claim that Sunday is missing from the week.
Germany did not invent a spare weekday for feast days. It closed some counters and left Donnerstag’s name on the square. If you only needed the year-count, you already have it: 52 weeks, then one or two leftovers, then the Monday–Friday filter, then holidays as a second filter. If you needed to read a German calendar, you need Monday-first habits, the seven names, and the Samstag/Sonnabend pair. Both answers live here because the search asked for the days in Germany and the leftover arithmetic in the same breath.
