The ordinary subtraction of two dates excludes the start date and includes the arrival as a difference. From 1 May to 2 May is one day. From 1 May to 8 May is seven days. That is the same rule a calculator of days between dates uses when it reports a difference rather than a list of dates.

An inclusive count lists every calendar date touched. 1 May through 2 May then contains two dates. Hotel nights, attendance, and some leave forms want that inclusive list, or they want nights, which follow the boundaries between dates. A calculator for days between dates cannot choose the convention for you. It can only apply the one you pick.

Reversed dates produce a negative difference if the tool keeps the sign, or a positive distance if it takes the absolute value. Both are usable when labeled. “Three days before” is not the same sentence as “the two dates are three days apart.” Keep the direction when a deadline runs backward.

Business day calculator

A business day calculator removes weekend days from the span, and often removes public holidays too. Weekdays and business days are not always the same set. A weekday count drops Saturday and Sunday. A business-day count also drops the holiday calendar that applies to that office, court, bank, or school.

Calendar days: every date, including weekends. Weekdays: Monday through Friday, holidays still included unless you remove them. Business days: weekdays minus the relevant holidays. Nights: overnight boundaries, not the same as dates on a guest list.

Holiday lists depend on country, region, and employer. A United States federal holiday is not a shop holiday everywhere, and a school closure is not a bank closure. The calculator needs that list. Without it, the honest output is weekdays, not “business days” in the legal sense.

Enter the two dates in an unambiguous order, with the year. Choose difference or inclusive count. Choose calendar days, weekdays, or business days. If business days, name the holiday calendar you mean.

The calculator will hand you a number. Only the sentence you typed can say whether the first date counts.

Leap days, months, and time zones

If the span crosses 29 February in a leap year, that date is a real extra calendar day. The same month-and-day pair in a common year has no such cell. A days calculator that uses real calendar dates will pick this up. Dividing a year by 365 and multiplying will not.

Months are the wrong conversion when you wanted days. February is shorter than July. “Three months later” is a calendar-field move, not a fixed day count. Use a days calculator when the question is days. Use a month rule when the question is months, and say what happens at the end of a short month.

Dates have no time zone. If one city is already on the next date, a person there and a person here can disagree about “today” while agreeing about an instant. For elapsed hours, use timestamps. For a calculator of days between dates, use the dates as each side wrote them and do not hide a zone shift inside the subtraction.
