Days between two dates
The number of days between two dates is the later calendar date minus the earlier one. From May 1 to May 2 that difference is one day if you exclude the starting date.
how many days are between two dates
Write both dates in the same calendar, then subtract. The ordinary difference counts the boundaries you cross and leaves out the starting morning. May 1 to May 8 is seven days that way, because a week later is seven crossings.
Days in between two dates can mean that same gap, or it can mean the dates that sit strictly inside the pair. From May 1 to May 8, the dates in between are May 2 through May 7 if you exclude both ends. Those two readings are not equal. Name the ends before you name a number.
How many days are between two dates and how many days in between two dates are the same search with a preposition moved. The arithmetic does not care which phrase you used. It cares whether May 1 counts, whether May 8 counts, and whether you wanted weekdays instead of calendar dates.
Standard difference: exclude the start, include the end as the last crossing. Inclusive dates: count both ends, which is the standard difference plus one. Interior dates: exclude both ends, which is the standard difference minus one.
No of days between two dates is just the count. There is no hidden extra unit. If you also have times of day, you have left date arithmetic and entered elapsed time, which can be 23 or 25 hours across a clock change even when the dates are neighbors.
Include the ends, or do not
Hotel nights usually follow the standard difference: check-in May 1 and check-out May 2 is one night. A leave form that says “May 1 through May 2” often wants two inclusive dates. A sentence that says “the days in between” often wants neither end. Three honest questions, three numbers.
If two people disagree about the number of days, they usually disagree about the first morning, not about subtraction. When a deadline says “within ten days after receipt,” read the rule that governs that deadline. A general count cannot choose a legal convention for you. It can only apply the convention you picked.
Write the earlier date and the later date without swapping them by accident. Say whether the start counts. Say whether the end counts. Subtract, then add one only if both ends count. If you need weekdays, remove Saturday and Sunday after the date count, then remove holidays that apply.
Workdays, reversed dates, and long spans
A workweek filter is a second pass. Ten calendar days are not ten workdays. A Monday-to-Monday span of 14 calendar days holds ten weekdays if no holiday sits inside, because each full week contributes five. Apply the holiday list of the place that employs you, not a generic weekend-only cut, if the result will be used at work.
If the later date is actually earlier, the signed difference is negative. From May 10 to May 7 is minus three days in the standard sense. Some tools show the distance as three and hide the direction. Keep the sign when direction matters, such as “days until” versus “days since.”
Leap Day is a real date. A span that crosses February 29 is one day longer than the same month-and-day span in a common year. 2026 is not a leap year, so February 28, 2026 to March 1, 2026 is one day. In a leap year that same pair of month-days would have February 29 sitting between them.
Questions and answers
- How many days are between May 1 and May 2?
- One day in the standard difference. Two inclusive dates. Zero interior dates.
- Do I count both dates?
- Only if you asked for inclusive dates. The default subtraction does not count the starting date as a full day in the total.
- Are weekdays the same as days between two dates?
- No. Weekdays are Monday through Friday inside the span. The raw day count includes Saturday and Sunday unless you remove them.
