Spring is a season. A rodeo is a dated event. Counting “how many days before spring” does not tell you when the first chute opens unless you have already named the rodeo. Astronomical spring in the Northern Hemisphere begins at the March equinox. A winter circuit rodeo can finish before that date. A summer rodeo sits months after it.

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo in 2026 ran from 2 March through 22 March. That window starts in late winter on the civil calendar and crosses the March equinox. Cheyenne Frontier Days in 2026 ran 17–26 July, which is summer, not the days before spring. College spring rodeos cluster from February through May because that is when the school term can hold them, not because the equinox issued a permit.

If you need a number of days, subtract dates. Pick the first performance you care about. Pick today, or pick the equinox, or pick the Monday you leave work. Do not mix those three clocks and call the result “days before rodeo.”

Weekdays on the grounds

Big rodeos are not Saturday-only. Houston 2026 put a concert and a performance on each night from Monday 2 March through Sunday 22 March. Weekdays were not warm-up nights in name; they were the grid. Cheyenne 2026 ran ten consecutive PRCA performances, Friday 17 July through Sunday 26 July, so the middle of that stretch was ordinary weekdays with a full house.

Local weekday rodeos still use the workweek. Slack — extra entries run before the paid evening show — often sits in the morning, on a weekday, when the arena is empty of spectators. Contestants treat those mornings as workdays. Fans who only buy Saturday miss the weekday performances that actually fill the season.

Name the rodeo and the first performance date. Count backward in calendar days if you need travel or time off. Mark Monday–Friday on that stretch; those are workdays for the crew and often show days for the public.

Do not start the count from the equinox unless spring itself was the question. Spring does not open the chute. The printed date does, and that date is allowed to be a Tuesday.

Slack, draw, and travel

PRCA roughstock draws are made at headquarters three days before the rodeo. Those three days are often weekdays. Timed-event cattle are drawn on site, shortly before a performance. If you are hauling, the days before the rodeo are driving days, rest days, and vet days. They are not a poetic prelude to Saturday.

Entry deadlines sit earlier than the first gun. A weekend performance can close entries on a weekday. If you wait for Friday night to ask “how many days before,” the office may already be closed. Read the association’s date, not the poster’s sunset photo.

Spring college schedules run through the week: a Thursday–Saturday rodeo is a common shape because students can travel after class. That is still “days before rodeo” on a Wednesday afternoon. The season does not wait for the first warm Saturday.
