Daylight savings
Daylight savings ends when clocks are set back one hour at the close of the DST period. In the United States that is the first Sunday in November: 2 November 2025 and 1 November 2026.
when does daylight savings time end
In places that still change clocks, the end is a Sunday in autumn. Clocks go back one hour, usually in the small hours of that morning. The United States, under federal law as it stands, uses the first Sunday in November. The European Union uses the last Sunday in October.
For the United States that means 3 November 2024, 2 November 2025, 1 November 2026, and 7 November 2027. For EU countries that still follow the common rule, the matching autumn Sundays are 27 October 2024, 26 October 2025, 25 October 2026, and 31 October 2027.
The start of daylight saving time is a different Sunday in spring, when clocks go forward one hour. In the United States that is the second Sunday in March: 9 March 2025 and 8 March 2026. In the EU it is the last Sunday in March: 30 March 2025 and 29 March 2026.
Not every place takes part. Hawaii does not use these clock changes. Most of Arizona does not either, with the Navajo Nation as the well-known exception inside that state. If your civil time never jumps in March or November, “when does it end” is the wrong question for your street.
Dates people look up by year
When is daylight savings 2025 in the United States? Clocks moved forward on 9 March 2025 and back on 2 November 2025. Daylight savings 2026 in the United States runs from 8 March 2026 to 1 November 2026. After 1 November 2026 the civil clock is on standard time until the next March.
Those dates are Sundays because the change is defined as a numbered Sunday, not as a fixed calendar number. 1 November 2026 happens to be a Sunday, so the “first Sunday in November” is the first of the month that year. In 2027 the first Sunday is the 7th.
Spring forward: second Sunday in March in the United States; last Sunday in March in the EU. Fall back: first Sunday in November in the United States; last Sunday in October in the EU. Local midnight is not always the instant of the change; many clocks jump at 02:00 local time.
Phone clocks that follow a network timezone usually move themselves; wall clocks do not. If you need a meeting across borders, name the timezone, not only “after the change.” Two cities can change on different Sundays, and some never change at all.
Falling back does not give you a spare hour to keep. It gives you an hour that happens twice, and both of them still end.
A bill is not a clock change
A daylight savings bill is a proposal to alter these rules: stay on standard time, stay on daylight time all year, or move the Sundays. A bill is not the calendar. Until it is enacted and in force, the Sundays above still govern the places that already use them.
Do not set a clock because a headline described a bill. Read whether the bill became law, where it applies, and on which date the new rule starts. A proposal in one country does not move clocks in another. A proposal in one state may not move clocks in the next.
If a law does change, the useful facts are the same as now: which Sunday, which direction, which hour. The names “daylight savings,” “daylight saving time,” and “summer time” all point to the same kind of shift. The legal text of your place is what decides the Sunday.
Until then, the practical task is small. On the autumn Sunday, set clocks that do not update themselves back one hour, and check alarms that were set the night before. An alarm left on a phone that auto-updates usually follows the new civil time. An alarm on a kitchen clock follows whatever hands you left on its face.
