How it works

12 December is a fixed calendar date. It does not move with the weekday and it does not wait for a Monday. In 2026 it is a Saturday. In 2027 it is a Sunday. The feast commemorates the Guadalupan account of the Virgin Mary appearing to Juan Diego on Tepeyac Hill, in what is now Mexico City, in December 1531, with the last of those appearances dated 12 December. The image associated with that account is kept in the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe at Tepeyac.

Catholics keep 12 December as a feast. In dioceses of the United States the day is on the liturgical calendar as the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. In Mexico she is a national and religious figure: patroness of the country, and later titled patroness of Latin America and of the Americas. Miguel Hidalgo used a Guadalupe banner in 1810 at the start of Mexico’s independence movement. The date is devotion and identity at once. It is not a U.S. federal holiday. U.S. banks follow ordinary December hours.

Mexico’s short list of nationwide paid rest days in federal labor law does not name 12 December. The date is still widely observed there: pilgrimages, Masses, school events, and many local closings. Mexico City runs a large operation around the basilica in the days leading to the 12th. Treat street closures and transit changes in that city as facts for that week, not as a U.S. shutdown.

Tepeyac, the image, and the night of the 11th

According to the traditional account, Juan Diego saw the Virgin on 9 December and again on 12 December 1531. She asked for a church on the hill. The image on his tilma is the picture pilgrims still come to see. That is the belief the feast keeps. A calendar page does not settle historical argument. It names the date the Church and Mexican custom actually use.

The night of 11 December into the 12th is when many people sing las mañanitas, the Mexican birthday song, at churches and at the basilica. Mariachi, flowers, candles, matachines dance, and children dressed as Juan Diego or as the Virgin are common marks. Some pilgrims walk for days. Some arrive by bicycle or bus. Some approach on their knees. Those are practices of devotion. They are not a dress code for every Catholic household far from Tepeyac.

Fixed date: 12 December every year. 2026: Saturday. 2027: Sunday. Place at the centre of the pilgrimage: the basilica at Tepeyac, Mexico City. U.S. status: a Catholic feast, not a federal closing. Mexican status: a major observance, not one of the nationwide paid rest days named in federal labor law.

12 December sits in Advent and just before las posadas, which in Mexico commonly begin 16 December. The feast does not move Christmas. Christmas does not move the 12th. A household can keep both. A planner that files Guadalupe under “Christmas party” has lost the name of the day.

12 December is a feast with a hill attached. If you only needed a December party, say party. If you meant Tepeyac, say the 12th.

Keeping the date away from Mexico City

Parishes outside Mexico hold Mass, processions, and las mañanitas on 12 December where the community asks for them. Hours are the parish’s. A U.S. civil office does not close because a feast is being sung two streets over. If you needed a legal holiday in December, look at Christmas Day and at whatever your own country lists. If you needed this feast, look at 12 December.

Travel to the basilica in the days around the 12th is a crowd and a transit problem as well as a pilgrimage. Read that year’s city notices for closed roads and metro changes. A guide page cannot freeze a live operations sheet. Dress for December in the highlands if you are going to Mexico City: cool nights, possible rain. Dress for your own climate if you are staying home and going to a local church.

From 3 September 2026 the Saturday in December is the next square. Do not treat a September Thursday as a secret Guadalupe day because a mixed holiday list was greedy. The feast is 12 December. The next one after that is 12 December 2027.
