How it works

Republic Day, republic day day, and day of the republic are search spellings for a civic anniversary: the day a state marks itself as a republic. The English phrase is empty until you name the country. India locks the date at 26 January, the day its constitution came into force in 1950. In 2026 that anniversary was Monday 26 January. In 2027 it is Tuesday 26 January. The date does not move to a Monday rule. Parades in New Delhi sit on the 26th.

Other republics keep other squares. Italy’s Festa della Repubblica is 2 June. Turkey’s Republic Day is 29 October. Those are not India’s 26 January, and they are not each other. Copying a neighbour’s fireworks onto the wrong month is how a planner books a hall for a country that is not having a holiday that morning.

The phrase is not a U.S. federal holiday. The United States marks Independence Day on 4 July, a different civic story with a different date. If the question was “is today a day off,” you still need the country of the office, not the word republic alone.

China republic day is not PRC National Day

Searches for china republic day usually want one of two October flags, and they are not the same flag. The People’s Republic of China keeps National Day on 1 October, the 1949 founding date in Beijing. In 2026 that is Thursday; in 2027 Friday. English that says “China National Day” almost always means that 1 October.

The Republic of China, in Taiwan, keeps National Day on 10 October, Double Ten, the anniversary of the 1911 Wuchang uprising. In 2026 that Saturday is 10 October, with Friday 9 October observed on the Taiwan public list. In 2027 the 10th is a Sunday, with Monday 11 October observed. The ROC also keeps 1 January as Founding Day of the Republic of China. That winter date is not Double Ten, and it is not PRC National Day.

India: 26 January every year; Monday in 2026, Tuesday in 2027. PRC National Day: 1 October; Thursday in 2026, Friday in 2027. ROC / Taiwan National Day (often “China Republic Day” in English): 10 October; Saturday in 2026, Sunday in 2027.

ROC Founding Day: 1 January, a different square. Republic Day is a proper name only after you name the republic. Without the country, the English phrase is a pile of unrelated Tuesdays.

Pick the country, then the shutter

If the office is in India, 26 January is the public date. If the office is in the PRC, 1 October is National Day, with a Golden Week notice around it. If the office is in Taiwan, 10 October is National Day, with observed weekdays when the 10th sits on a weekend. If the office is somewhere else, this English phrase may name that country’s own republic anniversary, or it may name nothing at all.

Do not treat a social-media “Happy Republic Day” graphic as a worldwide close. The graphic almost always assumed a country it did not print. Do not treat 26 January as a China date. Do not treat 1 October as India’s Republic Day. The words overlap. The constitutions do not.

From 3 September 2026, India’s 26 January 2026 has already passed; the next is 26 January 2027. PRC National Day 2026 is still ahead on 1 October. Taiwan’s 10 October 2026 is still ahead. Three futures, three states. The search box that stacked them into one slug did not merge the governments.
