The question splits. One reading wants how many dates wear a Monday-through-Friday name. The other wants how many dates exist, each with some name for the day. They share a remainder and they are not the same pile.

A common year has 365 dates. A leap year has 366. Seven does not divide those lengths evenly, so the year is fifty-two complete weeks plus one leftover date, or two leftover dates when 29 February exists. Fifty-two weeks already contain 260 Monday-through-Friday dates. Each leftover date joins that set only when it is not Saturday or Sunday. So the Monday–Friday total is 260, 261, or 262. There is no single slogan that is always true.

If “week days” means all seven names, every year contains all of them. Each name occurs 52 times in the fifty-two complete weeks. The leftover one or two dates give a 53rd copy to one or two weekdays. Which names get the extra copy depends on where 1 January sits, and on leap day. There is no permanent “Wednesday year.”

Holidays do not delete a name. A Wednesday that is closed for a feast is still Wednesday. Paid workdays are a later filter: take the Monday–Friday count, then subtract the closures that apply to the workplace you mean. The name of the day remains on the square.

The English name for each day

The name for day, in English, is one of seven: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday. The name of the days in a week is that list. Name days of the week in either Sunday-first order (common on United States wall grids) or Monday-first order (ISO weeks, and many timetables outside that U.S. habit). Days of the week name the columns. They do not name dates. 3 September 2026 is a Thursday; Thursday is the name, 3 September 2026 is the date. You need both to meet anyone. “Thursday” alone repeats every week. “3 September” alone repeats only in other years, and then on a different weekday.

Other rest pairs exist in other cultures; they still use local names on a seven-day cycle.

Where the names came from

The English days of the week name origins sit on an old mix of Latin planet-gods and Germanic gods. Sunday is the sun’s day. Monday is the moon’s day. Tuesday takes Tiw (Týr). Wednesday takes Woden (Odin). Thursday takes Thunor (Thor). Friday takes Frigg. Saturday kept Saturn, the Roman god, without a Germanic swap. That is the origin of the name of the days of the week in English, in outline. Romance languages kept more of the Latin set. English replaced most of the middle of the week with the northern names.

You do not need the gods to use the calendar. You need the order. Recite the seven, pick Sunday-first or Monday-first, and write them once at the top of a planner. Origins are a footnote. The column header is the tool.

The name for a day is a column header. It is not a personality, even when a rhyme tries to hire it as one. When two people say “name of the days in a week” and then argue about which is day one, they are arguing about the fence, not about the seven words. ISO numbers the weekdays from Monday as 1 to Sunday as 7. A Sunday-first grid still contains the same seven names. Count after you have named the start.
