Day 1 cpt
Day 1 CPT is Curricular Practical Training authorized to begin on the first day of a qualifying program. It is a start-date label on ordinary CPT, not a separate visa. The day count starts on the date written on the authorization.
How it works
Curricular Practical Training is practical training for an F-1 student when that training is part of an established curriculum. “Day 1 CPT” is a common descriptor for CPT that starts at the beginning of a program, rather than after a later waiting period. It is not its own immigration status and not a different alphabet of days.
Day 1 is a calendar date. It is the first civil day of the authorized CPT period as the school’s authorization states it. Work before that date is not “almost day 1.” Work after the stated end date is not leftover day 1. The authorization is the clock. A syllabus week number is not the clock unless the authorization uses that week.
Federal CPT rules live in the F-1 practical-training regulation. Schools apply them through a designated school official. This page counts days. It does not replace that official, a statute, or a school catalogue. Eligibility, full-time versus part-time limits, and whether a program may start CPT in the first term are questions for that process, not for a countdown widget.
What “day 1” is counting
Count from the start date on the document, not from the day you accepted the offer, not from the day you landed, and not from the first Monday that felt like orientation. If the authorization says 8 January, day 1 is 8 January. Day 2 is 9 January. Inclusive listing of a 10-day authorized span that runs 8 January through 17 January is 10 named dates. The gap from 8 January until 17 January, if you meant elapsed midnights after the start, is 9. Say which.
Read the start date and the end date on the CPT authorization. Confirm the time zone of those civil dates if the job site and the school sit in different zones. Do not start the count on a Sunday because the workweek “really” starts Monday, unless the document says Monday.
If a later term needs a new authorization, that later term has its own day 1. Do not extend the first stamp by arithmetic. A semester is a period. CPT authorization is often issued per term. A new term is a new stamp, not day 91 of the old one, unless the document actually runs that long. Adding 90 days to day 1 and calling the sum “the semester” will miss a school’s real last day.
What this page will not decide
Whether a given graduate program may authorize CPT at enrollment is a regulatory and school question. Whether an undergraduate must complete an academic year first is the same kind of question. Whether August 2026 agency messages changed a school’s practice is a question for that school’s official reading of those messages. None of those answers is a day count, and this page will not invent them.
The useful clock work is smaller. Keep the offer letter date, the authorization start, and the first shift on three lines. If they are three different mornings, the one that governs work is the authorization start. If they match, you still have one day 1, not three.
Day 1 is a date on the stamp. It is not a motivational slogan you can slide to the nearest Monday. If you need elapsed days of training for a timesheet, count the workdays actually authorized and actually worked. Weekend days still exist on the calendar. They count in a civil day span. They do not count as workdays unless you worked them under the authorization.
Questions and answers
- Is Day 1 CPT a separate visa?
- No. It is a name for CPT that starts at the beginning of a qualifying program. CPT itself is an F-1 practical-training authorization.
- When does the day count start?
- On the start date written on the CPT authorization, not on the offer-letter date unless those dates are the same.
- Can I treat day 1 as the first Monday of the term?
- Only if that Monday is the date on the authorization. Otherwise the document’s date wins.

10 year anniversary
A 10 year anniversary is the same month and day ten civil years after the original date. If that day does not exist in the later year, pick 28 February or 1 March and say which.
10000 days
10,000 days is a little more than 27 years: 27 × 365 = 9,855 days, so 145 days remain if you ignore leap days.
