Dates benefits

The benefit of a date is that you can count from it. A start date and an end date turn a vague stretch of time into a number of days you can check.

How it works

A calendar date is a named day in a named year. Once you have two of them, you can subtract. That is the practical benefit: memory becomes arithmetic. “Since spring” is not a span. “Since 1 March” is. The date does not make the event more important. It makes the event countable.

Dated records also stop a later argument about order. If one thing is dated the 3rd and another the 10th, you do not need to remember which happened first. The numbers already know. For counting days, that order is the whole method: earlier date, later date, difference. Without dates, you are left estimating in weeks and months, which do not stay proportional to each other.

Write the year. A date without a year is a nickname that repeats every twelve months. You cannot count a span across a year boundary if one end is only “12 June.” You also cannot tell a leap-year February from a common-year February. The year is not decoration. It is part of the measurement.

A dated start lets you count days until now, or days until a deadline. A dated end lets you close a span instead of leaving it open in speech. A year on the date lets the span cross January without guessing.

A weekday on the date is extra; the count of days does not need it, but planning work days does. Inclusive and exclusive counts both become possible only after the squares are named. “From 1 June to 10 June” can mean 10 dates on the wall or 9 elapsed days between the mornings. The benefit of dates is that you can choose the rule and still check it. A phrase like “early June” cannot be checked at all.

What a dated record is good for

Deadlines, notice periods, warranties, courses, and waiting times are all day counts in disguise. Their benefit appears only when both ends are dates. “90 days from delivery” is unusable if delivery was never dated. “Two weeks’ notice” is unusable if the notice was a conversation with no day on it. Writing the date is the cheap half of the count. The subtraction is easy after that.

Logs and journals get the same benefit. You can find how many days sat between two entries because the entries are dated. You cannot find it from the heading “later that week.” Weeks drift relative to month names; dates do not.

Repeating events need dates too, not only one-off events. “Every 30 days” is a schedule only after the first occurrence is pinned. Miss the first square and the whole series floats. The benefit is not the number 30. The benefit is that 30 has a place to start. An undated promise is a story. A dated promise is a span.

Counting when you refuse to name a date

People replace dates with round month talk because it sounds human. The cost is a span you cannot replay. Six months, 40 days, two weeks, and 90 days are all countable, but only after you pin one end to a calendar square. The benefit of dates is that they are those squares. Without them, every other counting trick on this site has nothing to grab.

If two systems date the same event on different local calendar dates because of time zones, write the place or the time zone next to the date. The benefit then survives the disagreement: you still have something to count from, and you know which civil calendar you meant. A bare weekday — “on Thursday” — has none of that benefit once Thursday has passed.

A clock time without a date is the same kind of hole, only smaller. “At 3 p.m.” does not tell you which 3 p.m. “3 p.m. on 3 September 2026” does. Pair them when the hours matter. For a day count, the date alone is the unit that pays.

Questions and answers

What is the use of putting a date on something?
You can count days from it, and you can put it in order with other dated events. Undated events cannot be subtracted.
Do I need the weekday as well as the date?
Not for a day count. You need weekdays when the span is work days. The date still comes first.
Why include the year?
Without the year you cannot count across New Year, and you cannot tell whether 29 February existed in that span.

10 year anniversary

A 10 year anniversary is the same month and day ten civil years after the original date. If that day does not exist in the later year, pick 28 February or 1 March and say which.

10,000 days is a little more than 27 years: 27 × 365 = 9,855 days, so 145 days remain if you ignore leap days.
