The meaning of Labor Day in the United States and Canada is a civic holiday for workers, kept on the first Monday in September. It is not D-Day, not 6 June, and not a World War II anniversary. In 2026 that Monday is 7 September. In 2027 it is 6 September. The day honours the labour movement and the people who work. Congress made the first Monday in September a federal holiday in 1894 after years of state holidays and after the Pullman strike. The first large parade was in New York City on 5 September 1882.
