Central Standard Time is one hour behind Eastern Standard Time. Noon CST is 1 p.m. EST when both zones are on standard time.
How it works
CST is UTC−6. EST is UTC−5. To go CST to EST, add one hour. To go EST to CST, subtract one hour. The conversion is a single step, which is why it is easy to ignore and then miss. A 2 p.m. Chicago meeting is 3 p.m. in New York. A 9 a.m. New York call is 8 a.m. in Dallas. Write the zone. A calendar that says “2 p.m.” without CST or EST is asking both rooms to guess.
EST vs CST is the same math in the other direction of the sentence. Eastern is ahead. Central is behind. EST versus CST does not change that order. CDT and EDT keep the same one-hour step in summer, because both zones (in the states that use daylight time) change on the same March and November Sundays.
Use America/Chicago and America/New_York in software. Those names follow the law. The letters CST and EST do not. Some people say “CST” for China Standard Time, which is UTC+8. If a message could be international, write “U.S. Central” or a city.
One hour is still a miss
A one-hour gap feels small next to a three-hour coastal gap. It is still enough to join a call after it started, or to arrive at a gate after boarding. If you convert EST to CST in your head, subtract. If you convert the other way, add. Do not “round to the same hour” because the cities are in the same country.
Several U.S. states are split. Florida is mostly Eastern, with the western Panhandle on Central. Indiana is mostly Eastern, with corners on Central. Kentucky, Tennessee, and Michigan also have more than one zone in parts of the state. A state name is not a zone name. Convert from a city or from the offset, not from “Florida time.”
Name the city or the offset on the invite. Add one hour from Central to Eastern; subtract one hour from Eastern to Central. In summer, use CDT and EDT the same way unless a place skips daylight time. Do not use a state line as the conversion. One hour is small until a meeting starts on the hour and you join on the previous one.
When the labels disagree
Most of the Central and Eastern United States change together, so CST vs EST in winter and CDT vs EDT in summer both stay one hour. The ugly case is a place that does not change. Then “EST” in November might sit next to a zone that is still on daylight, or a zone that never left standard time. Convert through UTC if the letters look mixed: EST is −5, CST is −6, CDT is −5, EDT is −4. Two labels with the same offset are the same instant with different names.
Canada uses Central and Eastern as well, with its own DST rules in a few pockets. Saskatchewan is a known special case (Central Standard year-round in civil time for most of the province). If the other person is not in the U.S. lower forty-eight, ask for a city. The phrase est versus cst still means “add or subtract one” only when both sides are actually on those U.S.-style offsets at that moment.
Travel days are when people keep their home zone in their head. You land in Atlanta and still subtract for “Chicago time” as if you had not moved. Reset the phone to local, then convert the other city from there. CST to EST is always the same arithmetic. Your location is what changes.
