Crowns same day

How it works

A traditional crown often occupies two squares on a calendar. On the first date the tooth is prepared, a record is taken, and a temporary cover is placed. An outside laboratory then spends days or weeks making the final crown. On a later date the temporary comes off and the finished crown goes on. Same-day crowns collapse those two dates into one.

The same-day path uses in-office scanning and milling, often under the CAD/CAM label, so the restoration can be designed and cut while you are still on that day’s appointment. You arrive on a date. You leave on that same date with the crown placed, when the case is suitable and the practice offers the method.

The calendar win is the missing second square. You do not wait for a lab week to pass. You still spend clock time on the visit itself. “Same day” names the date count, not a five-minute miracle. The civil date does not split. The hours inside it still elapse.

One date, not a shorter week

People hear “same day” and think the week got shorter. The week is still seven days. What vanished is the gap between visit one and visit two. If the old plan was “prepare on Monday, cement in two weeks,” the new plan is “Monday holds the whole job,” when that Monday’s case qualifies.

Not every tooth and not every practice uses the one-date path. A dentist may still send a case to a laboratory. A complex restoration may still need a later square. The phrase crowns same day is an offer about scheduling, not a law of dentistry. Ask whether this visit is the only visit before you clear the later date from your diary.

Traditional path: two appointment dates with a wait between them. Same-day path: prepare, mill, and fit on one civil date when the practice can do it. What the calendar drops: the lab-wait week and the second sitting.

What the calendar does not drop: the length of that one visit on the clock. Weekends do not change the meaning. A Thursday same-day crown is still one Thursday. A Saturday clinic, if it runs, is still one Saturday. The “same” in the name is same date as the preparation, not same as a business-day rule and not same as overnight shipping.

What to put on the planner

Write one date if you were told the crown will be finished in that sitting. Write two dates if you were told there will be a temporary and a return. If the plan changes in the chair, the planner has to change with it. The marketing name will not update your diary.

Leave travel time and a margin after the visit on that date. Same-day work can occupy a long appointment. Blocking only a lunch hour because the word “day” appears in the product name is a diary error, not a clinical one.

Do not copy a friend’s week-count. Their two-week lab wait was their laboratory. Your one-date visit is your practice’s machine and schedule. The only calendar that matters is the one with your name on the booking.

Same day means one square on the wall. It does not mean the clock inside that square stopped.
