Constitution day
Constitution Day in the United States is 17 September, the anniversary of the 1787 signing in Philadelphia. It is a federal observance, not a paid day off. Banks stay open.
How it works
The full U.S. name is Constitution Day and Citizenship Day. 36 U.S.C. § 106 sets 17 September for both. Constitution Week then runs through 23 September. In 2004 Congress required educational institutions that receive federal funds, and federal agencies, to offer a program on the Constitution on or around that date. If 17 September falls on a weekend, the program may sit on an adjacent weekday. In 2026 the 17th is a Thursday, so the date and the school day can be the same square.
The 1787 signing is the event being marked. The Constitution became the supreme law after ratification and after it took effect in 1789. This page is not a lecture on every clause. It is a calendar page: 17 September, every year, same number, changing weekday. It does not slide to the nearest Monday for a long weekend. Labor Day already took the first Monday in September. This Thursday, or whichever weekday the 17th is, remains an ordinary business day for mail and most offices.
Other countries keep a Constitution Day on other dates. Norway’s national day is 17 May. Denmark’s Grundlovsdag is 5 June. Mexico’s Día de la Constitución is 5 February and is a statutory holiday there. Those are not this U.S. September date. A search that only says “constitution day” in a U.S. results page usually wants 17 September.
U.S. date: 17 September every year. Legal name: Constitution Day and Citizenship Day. Week: 17 through 23 September. Status: federal observance and school program duty for federally funded institutions; not a bank holiday.
Citizenship sits on the same square
Citizenship Day used to live on another spring date. Congress later parked it on 17 September so the signing and the civic lesson share a morning. Naturalization ceremonies are often held that week. A new citizen’s oath does not require the rest of the country to stay home. Schools that receive federal money must hold some educational program. The statute does not prescribe a quiz length. A reading of the Preamble is one common form. A classroom visit from a judge is another. Skipping the program because “it is not a day off” misses the one duty the law actually wrote.
Display of the U.S. flag on government buildings is part of the observance language. That is a flag on a working building, not a shuttered one. If you want a picnic, the weather in mid-September is your problem, not the National Archives’.
A constitution that needs a three-day weekend to be noticed is already in trouble. Read it on a Thursday.
What 17 September is not
It is not Independence Day. That remains 4 July, the 1776 date. It is not Bill of Rights Day, which is 15 December, the 1791 ratification of the first ten amendments. It is not Election Day. Mixing those searches is how a civics page turns into fireworks. Keep the signing in September. Keep the Declaration in July. Keep the amendments in December if that is the document you meant.
In 2026, 17 September is Thursday. The following week still includes Constitution Week through the 23rd. A school that holds its program on Friday 18 September because of a timetable is still inside the adjacent-day rule people use when the 17th is awkward. A school that forgets until October is late. The anniversary does not wait.
