Citizens all day
Citizens all day is not a public holiday. On a U.S. federal holiday, people may have the date off, while a bank named Citizens typically shuts its lobby and leaves cards, ATMs, and apps running.
How it works
The phrase collides three things. One is the civic fact: on a federal holiday, many citizens are not at a workplace. One is a bank name: Citizens is a common title for U.S. banks, including large regional banks and smaller “Citizens Bank & Trust” shops that are not the same company. One is the hope that something stays open all day — a lobby, a phone line, an ATM. Those three do not share a timetable. A day off for a household is not a day on for a teller window.
U.S. Federal Reserve banks close on the federal holiday list. Most commercial-bank branches follow that list for the lobby. Christmas Day 2026 is Friday 25 December. Thanksgiving 2026 is Thursday 26 November. Labor Day 2026 is Monday 7 September. New Year’s Day 2026 was Thursday 1 January. On those dates, a Citizens lobby you used on a Tuesday is likely locked. That is a branch policy you still confirm on that branch’s locator, because a supermarket kiosk and a downtown lobby can disagree, and because two banks that both say “Citizens” on the glass can be different firms.
Christmas Eve is 24 December, not a federal holiday. Some lobbies shorten the Eve. Some do not. Do not copy the 25th onto the 24th. Do not copy one city’s supermarket branch onto another city’s plaza branch.
Federal holidays: offices and most bank lobbies closed. Eve dates: often shorter, not automatically closed. ATMs, cards, and apps: often available around the clock. Same name on the door does not mean the same bank.
A holiday can send citizens home all day and still leave them standing in front of a locked lobby. The card in the pocket is the all-day door.
All day is a channel, not a building
All-day access on a holiday usually means the channels that do not need a teller: an ATM in a wall, a mobile deposit, a card at a grocer. Cash that must be counted by a person waits for the next business day. A bill you scheduled for 25 December may post when the banking system reopens. That delay is the holiday calendar of the payment network, not a punishment and not a rumour. If a payment must land before a feast, send it on the last business day before the close, not on the morning of the close.
Phone lines split the same way. An automated line may answer at 03:00 on Christmas. A person on the other end may not. Weekend hours and holiday hours are different printed grids. Read the grid for the date you will call. A Saturday script does not cover 25 December.
A day off is still a dated day
For the household, “citizens all day” can simply mean everyone is home. That is a staffing fact, not a third kind of time. The date still has 1,440 minutes. Schools and federal offices follow the federal list or a local list; a private employer may stay open. If your question is “do I have today off,” you need your employer’s list, not a bank’s. If your question is “can I walk into Citizens,” you need that branch’s holiday line. If your question is “can I get cash,” an ATM is the honest all-day answer on a closed-lobby date.
From 3 September 2026, the next federal holiday in the United States is Labor Day on 7 September, then Columbus Day on 12 October, then Veterans Day on 11 November, then Thanksgiving, then Christmas. Those are the dates when the lobby question repeats. The app question usually does not.
Questions and answers
- Is “citizens all day” a holiday?
- No. It is a phrase. Public holidays are named dates. A bank named Citizens is a business on those dates.
- Are Citizens branches open on Christmas Day?
- Expect the lobby to follow the federal close on 25 December. Confirm the branch. ATMs and apps often still run.
- Can I bank all day on a holiday?
- Often by card, ATM, or app. Teller work waits for the next open business day.
