Christmas wreath

How it works

The circle is the form. Evergreen branches — fir, pine, spruce, cedar, boxwood — hold their color in northern winter, which is why they read as Christmas on a door in December. Ribbon, pinecones, bells, dried orange, and lights are extras, not the definition. A wreath can be fresh, dried, or artificial. Fresh needs water or a cool place; artificial needs storage that does not crush the shape. Neither kind is a federal holiday. Hanging one does not close a bank.

Door wreaths face the street. Table wreaths, including Advent wreaths, sit flat and must leave room in the middle. Do not hang a candle wreath on a door and light it. Do not put an open flame under a dry needle wreath. The season is midwinter in the north: indoor heat dries fresh greens faster than a porch in the cold. A wreath that was lush on 1 December can be brittle by the 24th if it sits over a radiator.

Door circle and Advent circle

A door Christmas wreath is a decoration. You hang it when you decorate, often in late November or early December, and take it down after the feast or after Epiphany on 6 January if that is your custom. There is no single civil start date. Neighborhoods differ. HOA rules differ. If a building forbids door hangings, the wreath belongs on an interior hook, not in an argument with a lease.

An Advent wreath is a Christian devotion for Advent, the season that leads up to Christmas. It is a circle of greens with four candles, one lighted on each of the four Sundays of Advent. Many churches use three purple or blue candles and one rose candle for the third Sunday; some add a white candle in the center for Christmas. The candles mark weeks, not shopping days. Advent begins four Sundays before 25 December, so the first lighting moves from year to year. The wreath on the table is not the same object as the wreath on the door, even when both are pine.

A circle on the door says the house is keeping winter. A circle with four candles says the house is counting Sundays. Hang the one you mean.

Keeping it through December

Christmas Eve is 24 December. Christmas Day is 25 December. A wreath hung in November will live or die by moisture and wind, not by the feast. Outdoors in cold air, fresh greens last longer. Indoors, mist or a damp base helps. Artificial wreaths can stay up as long as you like; sun through a storm door can fade the dye. Store them in a box that keeps the ring round, or you will spend next November bending wire.

If you make one, use a wire or straw ring, bundle short stems in the same direction, and tie them tight. Work in a cool room. Gloves help with sap. If you buy one, ask whether it is fresh or preserved. Preserved greens are dyed and sealed; they do not need water, and they do not smell like a cut tree. Fresh smells like a cut tree and needs the care of a cut tree.

Take it down when it sheds, droops, or becomes a fire load, even if that is before New Year’s. A bald ring on 2 January is not a moral failure. In 2026 the Day is Friday, 25 December; the wreath does not care which weekday that is. The weekday only changes when you have time to hang it.
