Christmas word search

A Christmas word search is a grid of letters hiding holiday words. You circle each word from a list — tree, sleigh, holly — until the list is empty.

How it works

The puzzle is a rectangle of mixed letters. Beside it, or under it, sits a list of Christmas words. Each listed word appears in the grid in a straight line: across, down, sometimes diagonal, sometimes backwards. You find it, mark it, and tick the list. When the list is done, leftover letters in some puzzles spell a last phrase. In others, leftover letters are just leftover letters. Read the instruction line on that sheet.

This is a waiting game. It belongs on a kitchen table while a roast finishes, in a classroom in December, on a car seat, in a church hall before a pageant. It is not a liturgy. It does not tell you when Christmas is. Christmas Day is 25 December. Christmas Eve is 24 December. The grid is something to do with the hours around those dates.

Print it, photocopy it, or open it on a tablet and circle with a finger. Pencil is kinder than a marker if more than one person will share the same paper. A child who cannot yet read can still hunt a short word you point to, or colour the shapes after the hunt.

Christmas words that actually hide in the grid

The list is the holiday’s vocabulary, not a secret code. Typical Christmas words are the objects and names of the season. A secular sheet leans on Santa, sleigh, reindeer, stocking, chimney, elf, tree, tinsel, ornament, wreath, holly, ivy, mistletoe, gingerbread, carol. A nativity sheet leans on manger, shepherd, angel, star, Bethlehem, Mary, Joseph, frankincense, myrrh. Both can appear on one page. Neither list is mandatory. The publisher of that sheet chose the words. If a word is not on the list, it does not have to be in the grid.

Household: tree, stocking, wreath, tinsel, ornament, lights. Storybook: Santa, sleigh, reindeer, elf, chimney. Plant: holly, ivy, mistletoe, poinsettia. Nativity: manger, angel, star, shepherd, Bethlehem.

Table: pudding, gravy, mince, carol, Noel, Yule. Difficulty is length and direction. Short words in rows are for young hunters. Long words on diagonals, written backwards, are for people who want a slower hunt. A sheet that mixes both should say so. If the same word can be read two ways, circle the one the list intended; arguing about a ghost word is how a quiet puzzle becomes a tribunal.

Using it as a wait, not a test

Do not time a child unless they asked to be timed. Do not grade the sheet. A Christmas word search is a way to keep hands busy without another screen. One page is a sitting. A book of fifty is a rainy week. If you are printing, print the page you will use today. A stack on the sideboard is not a tradition; it is paper.

Read the directions: directions of search, and whether leftovers form a phrase. Give each hunter a different colour if they share one grid. Start with the longest words; they are easier to spot as a block.

Stop when the list is done or when the kitchen needs the table. A word search is a list pretending to be a forest. The Christmas is in the words. The feast is still on 25 December, whether you found “holly” or not.

Finished grids can go in the bin. The work was the looking. If a leftover phrase is a greeting, you can copy it onto a card. If there is no leftover phrase, you still did the puzzle. Put the pencils back before pudding. The 25th does not require a completed grid. It requires a date, and that date is already named.

Questions and answers

What are Christmas words in a word search?
The listed holiday terms hidden in the grid: household objects, Santa-story names, plants, nativity words, or food words, as that sheet chose.
Do the words have to go in every direction?
Only if the sheet says so. Some puzzles use rows and columns only. Read the line at the top.
Is this a Christmas game for the whole table?
It can be, if people want a quiet hunt. It is optional. Talking, walking, and sitting still are also allowed on 25 December.
