Christmas wishlist
A Christmas wishlist is a list of gifts someone hopes to receive by 25 December. Write names, sizes, and titles. The list is a tool. It is not the feast.
How it works
You write down what would actually help, what would actually be used, and what would actually fit through the door. Other people read it and pick from it. That is the mechanism. A Christmas wishlist is not a contract. Nobody owes you every line. You do not owe a performance of surprise if you published the list on purpose. The honest version is a menu. The dishonest version is a test.
Children’s lists often go to Santa. Adult lists often go to a partner, a parent, a sibling group, or a shared note. The audience changes the tone. A letter to Santa can be wishful and long. A list for a household with a real budget should be ranked, sized, and possible to buy in the days that remain. From early September a long list is a conversation. From mid-December a long list is a problem.
The civil feast is 25 December. In 2026 that Friday is the Day. The Eve is Thursday 24 December. A wishlist aimed at the morning of the 25th needs items that can arrive or be collected before that morning. This page will not invent a last posting date. Carriers publish their own Christmas timetables each year. Read the one you will use.
Making a list someone can use
Use nouns a shopper can search: a title, a maker, a size, a colour you will wear, a shop that stocks it. “Clothes” is not a line. “Something nice” is not a line. “The blue jumper in the window” is a line only if the window still exists. Links help when the object is specific. Links rot; keep the name of the thing as well as the URL.
Write the person’s name at the top, and the date the list is for. Put a few items at different prices, not one impossible object. Add size, age, and whether a duplicate would be a disaster. Mark what you already own so nobody buys the second copy.
Update it when you buy something yourself. A stale list is how you get two kettles. If several people share the same recipient, one list in one place beats three private guesses. A crossed-off item is a kindness. A list that never gets crossed off is how two aunts buy the same book. Paper on a fridge works for a house. A shared note works for a family that does not share a fridge. Pick one and tell everyone which.
Santa, shared lists, and late changes
A letter to Santa is a Christmas wishlist with a story around it. Keep a copy if an adult still has to go to a shop. The chimney is not a warehouse. If the household keeps the Santa story, the adult list and the Santa letter can differ on purpose: one is logistics, one is play. Do not mock the play on the 24th. Do not treat the logistics as optional because the letter was charming.
Charity wishlists — a tree in a lobby with tags for strangers — are a different job: you are buying for a person you will not meet, to a size and age printed on the tag. Follow the tag. Do not substitute a joke gift. Do not wrap something that needs a battery you did not include.
A list with no sizes is a riddle. Santa is not a tailor, and neither is your brother-in-law. You can change a list. Say so. A silent edit after someone has already paid is how Christmas morning becomes an argument. If the present will miss the 25th, say that too, and move the opening on purpose. The feast is the date. The object can arrive on the 27th without cancelling the 25th. What wrecks the morning is a promise that pretended the calendar was optional.
