How it works

The same two words cover three different things, and mixing them wastes a trip. One kind is a seasonal attraction on real ground: you buy a ticket or walk in free, you move among buildings and lights, and the season has a start and an end. Another kind is an outdoor Christmas market with wooden booths, food, and gifts, usually from late November into December. A third kind is a miniature village of ceramic or porcelain buildings, often lit from inside, set on a mantel, a sideboard, or a table at home. Koziar's Christmas Village, Christmas Village Philadelphia, Baltimore Christmas Village, and a Department 56 Christmas village are not one address.

Winter is the season for all of them in the Northern Hemisphere. Meteorological winter is December, January, and February. Outdoor markets and walk-through lights run in short daylight and long evenings. Indoor miniatures can sit out from the first box of ornaments until they are packed again. The weather does the outdoor work. The shelf does the indoor work.

A farm walk in Pennsylvania

Koziar's Christmas Village is a walk-through light display on the Koziar family farm near Bernville in Berks County, Pennsylvania, at 782 Christmas Village Road. It began as a family decoration in 1948 and remains family-run. Visitors walk the grounds; it is not a drive-through. The season typically opens the first Saturday in November, weekends only until Thanksgiving, then every night through early January, including Christmas night. For 2026 the operator lists 7 November through 2 January 2027 as the 79th season. Hours, prices, and weather closings belong on the operator’s page for that week.

Dress for a northern December night. Parking is on site. Pets are not allowed under the posted rules. A drive from Philadelphia is a separate trip from the Center City market. Same state, different kind of village.

Markets in Philadelphia and Baltimore

Christmas Village Philadelphia is an outdoor German-style holiday market at LOVE Park and City Hall. Wooden booths, European food, gifts, and lights sit in late November and December. The organizer’s 2026 listing runs from 21 November through 27 December, closed on Christmas Day. Ordinary hours are afternoon into evening; Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve are shorter. Walking the market is free; food, rides, and goods are paid. Confirm that year’s calendar before you travel.

Baltimore Christmas Village is the Inner Harbor version, at West Shore Park near 501 Light Street. It has run as a German-style market since 2013, with a gap in 2020. The organizer’s 2026 listing also runs from 21 November through 27 December, closed on Christmas Day, and closed most Mondays and Tuesdays except posted late-December exceptions. Outdoor areas are typically free; some tent hours may be ticketed. Weather can end a session early. Read the day’s notice, not last year’s memory.

Decide which village you mean: walk-through lights, city market, or tabletop buildings. Read that operator’s dates for this season. Markets often close on December 25 even when the lights stay up. Plan for winter dark: afternoon arrival, layers, and a backup if rain or snow ends the outdoor hours.

Keep Koziar’s, Philadelphia, and Baltimore as three trips, not one combined ticket. A village on a table does not need a parking lot. A village in a park does not fit in a box. Name the kind before you pack the car.

Department 56 on a table

A Department 56 Christmas village is a collectible set of miniature lighted buildings, not a street you can walk. The brand began in 1976 as a gift division at Bachman’s, a Minneapolis florist, and took its name from that company’s department number. The first Original Snow Village pieces were six hand-painted ceramic buildings. Later series include Dickens’ Village, Alpine Village, New England Village, Christmas in the City, and North Pole. The date on the bottom is a copyright year, not always the year it was sold. The company is now under Enesco, in Eden Prairie, Minnesota.

Display is household work: a flat surface, power as the pieces require, and room so a cat cannot knock the church into the pond. Other makers sell villages too. “Department 56” is a brand, not a synonym for every ceramic house. A tabletop search does not need a map of Pennsylvania. A Koziar’s, Philadelphia, or Baltimore search is not solved by a ceramic church.
