How it works

A cast list is a map from face to name. For this film the map starts with the Griswolds in the suburban house and then fills the rooms with parents, a cousin’s family, neighbors, and a boss. Everyone else is pressure on that unit: in-laws, a surprise on the lawn, a workplace that will not behave.

Credits also include people you remember as a single gag rather than as a biography. That is normal. You do not need a full encyclopedia to watch the movie. You need enough names to settle an argument about who played the neighbor, the boss, or Aunt Bethany.

The house, the relatives, the next-door disaster

Clark’s parents are John Randolph and Diane Ladd. Ellen’s parents are E.G. Marshall and Doris Roberts. Uncle Lewis is William Hickey. Aunt Bethany is Mae Questel. Eddie’s wife Catherine is Miriam Flynn. That block is the dining-room crowd: two sets of parents, an uncle, an aunt, and the cousin’s household stacked on top of Clark’s plan.

Next door, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Nicholas Guest play the yuppie neighbors who live in the blast radius of Clark’s lighting. Brian Doyle-Murray plays Clark’s boss, Frank Shirley, whose holiday decision is one of the plot’s last gears. Later faces, same last name

Later Vacation projects recast the children and sometimes skip Clark. The 2003 television film about Cousin Eddie is not this company with a new hat. When someone asks for the Christmas Vacation cast, they usually mean the 1989 theatrical credits above, not a reunion special and not the 1983 road movie.

Lewis and Galecki were young in 1989 and became easy to recognize later in other work. That does not change who they play here. Chase, D'Angelo, and Quaid are the through-line from the earlier series idea. If a photo set online mixes stills from Vegas Vacation or from the 1983 film, look at the clothes: winter house and outdoor lights mean this cast; a station wagon in summer means the other one.
