Start with the trunk: a small rectangle or two short vertical lines near the bottom of the page. On top of that, draw a triangle whose base is wider than the trunk and whose point is the peak of the tree. That single triangle is already a Christmas tree in the simplest reading. If you want a layered tree, stack two or three triangles, each one wider than the one above, overlapping so they read as branches rather than as separate hats.

The star or the angel is a small shape on the peak: a cross, a five-point star you sketch loosely, or a circle with a hint of a head. Ornaments are circles, dots, or tiny teardrops hanging from the edges. Lights can be a dotted line that zigzags down the triangles. A pot or a stand is a trapezoid or a simple box under the trunk. None of this needs perspective. A child-facing drawing is allowed to be flat.

Draw the trunk low on the page, short and centred. Add one large triangle, or two or three stacked ones. Put a small star or other topper on the peak. Scatter circles for ornaments; a zigzag of dots for lights.

Sit the trunk on a box, a pot, or a simple stand. Colour is optional. Green for the triangles, brown for the trunk, yellow for the star is the usual map. A white page with only pencil still reads as a Christmas tree if the triangle-and-trunk is clear. The letters people type around the idea — “w christmas tree,” or the word tree repeated — do not change the drawing. They are search noise around the same object.

What the real tree is

The living version is usually a fir, spruce, or pine, cut or potted, brought inside and held upright in a stand with water, or an artificial copy of that shape. The indoor dressed evergreen is a German-speaking custom that spread into other countries and is now ordinary in much of civil Christmas. A tree in a town square follows the same idea at public scale: a large evergreen, lights, sometimes a topper, sometimes a fence.

Real trees need water in the stand. A dry cut tree is a fire risk next to lights. Artificial trees need a wide enough base that a cat or a toddler cannot walk them over. Lights should be the kind meant for indoor trees if the tree is indoors. Those are household cautions, not slogans. The object is still a dressed evergreen, whether the needles are living or made.

Dressing it without a second job

Pick a place where the door can still open and the room can still be walked. Stand the tree. Add lights first if you use lights, so they sit under ornaments rather than fighting them. Then hang the heavier ornaments toward the inside of a branch, lighter ones toward the tip. A topper last, so you are not working around a star while you still need both hands for the cord. Stop when the tree looks finished to the people who live with it. There is no quota of baubles.

If the star takes longer than the triangle, you are decorating a drawing, not drawing a tree. Start with the shape you can finish. Take the tree down after the season. A real tree that drops its needles has ended its indoor job. An artificial tree goes back in a box. The drawing on the fridge can stay as long as the paper holds.
