Christmas star

How it works

In the Gospel of Matthew, magi from the east see a star, take it as a sign of a newborn king, and follow it to Judea. Herod points them toward Bethlehem. The star, in the telling, goes ahead of them until it stands over the place of the child. That is the Christian story the phrase “Christmas star” still names. It is not a second sun in the kitchen. It is a sign in a birth narrative. Churches read it in the days around Nativity and Epiphany. School plays put a foil star on a stick. The stick is not the theology. The story is.

People have offered astronomical guesses — a conjunction of planets, a comet, a nova — for what, if anything, the Magi saw. Those are guesses. The text does not name a catalogue number. A page that tells you exactly which night sky it was is guessing with confidence. This page will not. The feast uses the story. Astronomers can argue in January.

The star on the tree

A Christmas-star tree topper is a five-point or multi-point star, often called a Star of Bethlehem in shops, set on the highest bough. Some houses use an angel instead. Some use a bow. The star is the one that points back at Matthew. Moravian stars — pointed glass or paper polyhedra from the Herrnhut tradition — hang in windows and over tables as well as on trees. A lighted topper needs a clip or a cone that actually fits the tip. A star that leans is a star that will fall when the cat climbs.

Nativity star: the sign in Matthew that leads the Magi to Bethlehem. Tree-topper star: a decoration that sits above the lights, often named for Bethlehem. Moravian star: a many-pointed star from that church’s craft tradition, used as hanging light or ornament.

Window star: folded paper or a lighted form, not always the same object as the topper. Plant names: some flowers are nicknamed Christmas star in other languages; in English that is usually not this search.

Put lights on the tree first, then the star, then the last high ornaments. If you do the star first you will knock it off while stretching for a hook. Unplug a wired topper before you climb. A battery topper still needs a firm seat; it is not a hat. When the season ends, wrap the points so they do not punch the stored tinsel. Next December you want a star, not a bag of spikes.

The star on the tree is a pointer, not a second sun. Seat it last, after the lights, or you will spend the evening picking it out of the gifts.

Using the name without mixing objects

If a child asks what the Christmas star is, start with the Magi, then show the topper. If an adult asks where to buy a Christmas star, they usually mean the topper. If an astronomer asks, they mean a research argument you are not required to settle at the dinner table. Nativity plays can use a lantern. Trees can use a homemade card-stock star. Cost is not holiness. A foil star taped to a pencil is still doing the job if the people in the room know what it stands for.

Do not confuse this with the Star of David, which is a different six-point symbol with a different history. Do not confuse it with a comet you saw in a documentary thumbnail. The Christmas star, in ordinary December speech, is either Matthew’s sign or the thing on the tree. Say which one you mean and the rest of the evening gets easier.
