Christmas quotes
Christmas quotes are short lines used on cards, in toasts, or on a print: Dickens, a nativity verse, or a plain Merry Christmas. A quote is wording. It is not a date.
How it works
You need a sentence that fits the space and the person. A card has a panel. A toast has a breath. A print on a wall has to survive being read in January if you leave it up. Christmas quotes that work are short, correctly attributed, and welcome in that room. A joke that only your kitchen understands will not travel. A verse that the household does not hold as scripture will sit oddly on a secular table. Pick the voice you actually share.
Public-domain lines are the ones you can print without a license puzzle. Charles Dickens published A Christmas Carol in 1843. Tiny Tim’s line is “God bless us, every one!” Scrooge, late in the book, says he will honour Christmas in his heart and try to keep it all the year. The 1823 poem widely printed as Clement Clarke Moore’s A Visit from St. Nicholas opens, “’Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house.” The King James nativity in Luke includes “Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.” Those sentences are old enough to use. A line you remember from a film still in copyright is not a free poster.
“Merry Christmas” is a greeting, not a quotation from a single author. It is enough for most cards. You do not owe anyone a paragraph of borrowed wisdom under the flap.
Lines you can actually print
Attribute what you lift. “Dickens” is not a personality. Name the book if you take a sentence from it. Name Luke if you take a verse, and name the translation. If you cannot name the source, do not put quotation marks around a phrase you half remember. Paraphrase in your own words, or write a plain wish.
Greeting: Merry Christmas. Optional: and a happy new year. Dickens, A Christmas Carol: “God bless us, every one!” Moore’s St. Nicholas poem: the opening night-before-Christmas couplet, if the card has room.
Luke’s nativity, if that is the household’s story, in a translation you are allowed to reprint. Your own sentence: who you miss, who is at the table, what you hope for the 25th. Do not invent a statistic about which quote is the most shared. Do not hang a ranking on a kitchen wall. The right line is the one the reader will not flinch at. A house that does not keep Christmas as a religious feast can still say Merry Christmas, or can say happy holidays, without a court. A house that does keep the feast may want Luke and nothing from a soda advert.
Cards, toasts, and overused type
On a card, one sentence beats three stacked mottos. The name at the bottom is part of the message. On a toast, stand, say the line, name the people in the room, and sit down. A speech that explains the history of Boxing Day is not a quote. It is a lecture next to the potatoes.
Typography: long quotes in script type are hard to read across a table. Dark ink on a pale card still wins. If you print a poem, keep the line breaks the poet used. If you only want the feeling of the night-before-Christmas poem, one couplet is enough. The rest of the stockings-and-sleigh narrative does not have to ride along.
If you cannot name who wrote it, it is not a quote yet. It is a rumour in festive font. Christmas Day remains 25 December whether the card quotes Dickens or only your aunt. In 2026 that date is a Friday. Send paper early enough for the post you are using. A toast on the 24th is an Eve toast. A toast on the 25th is the Day. The sentence can be the same. The square on the calendar is not.
Questions and answers
- What is a safe short Christmas quote for a card?
- Merry Christmas. If you want a literary line, Tiny Tim’s “God bless us, every one!” from A Christmas Carol is short and public domain.
- Can I print any line I remember from a film?
- Not freely. Dialogue from a work still in copyright is not yours to turn into a poster. Use a greeting, your own words, or a public-domain line you can name.
- Do I have to use a religious verse?
- No. Use Luke if that is your household’s story. Use a secular greeting if it is not.
