Christmas pillows
Christmas pillows are seasonal cushions or covers with holiday motifs, sat on a sofa, bed, or window seat for December. They decorate the room; they do not move 25 December.
How it works
You swap the everyday cushion covers for ones that read as the holiday — trees, stars, tartan, holly, a slogan, a knitted face of a reindeer — or you add a few extra pillows in those colours and put the plain ones in a cupboard. The furniture is the same. The sit is the same. The room has changed its shirt.
A cover is easier to store than a whole stuffed pillow. Zip or envelope backs come off. The inner pad stays in the house all year. Novelty shapes — a giant present, a stuffed snowman — take shelf space and often cannot be leant on. If nobody can sit, you have bought a stuffed ornament that stole a seat. Size for the sofa you have. A 45 cm square on a deep couch reads. The same square piled four high on a kitchen chair is a stack, not a welcome.
Knit, velvet, cotton, felt, and faux fur all show up in this aisle. Knit pills. Velvet marks if a pet kneads it. White faux fur shows every biscuit. Read the care label before gravy day. A cover that is surface-wipe only does not belong on the chair nearest the table. A washable cotton with a tree print does.
Covers, inners, and where they sit
The sofa is the obvious stage. A bed can take two holiday shams in front of the sleeping pillows if you like making a bed you will unmake every night. A window seat is a good small stage: one or two pillows, a garland on the frame, done. Stairs are not a stage. A pillow on a tread is a fall. Floors next to a hearth need the same caution as any textile near heat.
Washable covers for the seats people actually use. One or two louder novelty pillows where they will be seen and not crushed, if you want them at all. Inners that already fit; stuffing a 50 cm pad into a 40 cm cover makes a bun, not a cushion.
A cupboard or under-bed box labelled December, not a mixed “decor” crate you will not reopen in time. Pets and small children chew piping and swallow loose bells. Sewn-flat motifs beat glued foam and dangling pom-poms on a family sofa. If a cover arrived with plastic holly berries stitched on, check they are tight. A berry on the floor is not a decoration. It is a choking hazard.
When they go up and when they come down
There is no law. Some houses switch the sofa the weekend after U.S. Thanksgiving (26 November in 2026). Some wait until Advent Sunday (29 November in 2026). Some wait until the tree is up. Put them out when the rest of the room is ready, or they look like a shop display that escaped. Take them down when the tree comes down, or earlier if gravy won. A red tartan cushion in February is not “still festive.” It is laundry you postponed.
Store covers clean. Moth and damp wreck wool. A sealed box with the rest of the December textiles keeps next year’s hunt short. Do not compress a filled pillow under a stack of books; the inner will not recover. Covers can be folded. Inners need to sit like pillows.
A pillow that cannot be sat on is a stuffed ornament that stole a seat. You can make covers from leftover wrapping fabric, an old jumper, or plain cloth with one appliquéd tree. Finish the seams so they survive a wash. A raw felt cut-out glued to a cushion will peel on the first sit. That is a craft afternoon, not a sofa.
