How it works

People type christmas pictures when they want something to look at, something to print, or something to send. That request splits. One kind is a picture you take: people in a room, a tree, a table, a church, a street of lights. Another kind is a picture you borrow: a stock photo, a painting of the nativity, a historic card. The first kind needs a camera and consent. The second kind needs a license, the same rule as clipart, because a photograph is still someone’s work.

Northern Christmas pictures are night pictures more often than June pictures. The feast sits after the December solstice, in the season of short daylight. Indoor lamps, tree lights, and window candles do the work. A flash on faces in a dark room will flatten the tree. Available light, a still subject, and a camera that can hold a slow shutter will look more like the evening you were actually in. In the Southern Hemisphere the same date is summer; beach and backyard daylight are honest Christmas pictures there.

Taking the household picture

Christmas Eve is 24 December. Christmas morning is 25 December. Those are the two windows most families mean. Pick one and tell people. A photo “whenever” often happens never, because the day is already full. Ten minutes before the meal is a real slot. Matching pajamas, if you use them, belong in that slot, then they can come off. Children will not hold a pose for a lighting diagram. Sit them, stand the adults, and take more frames than you think you need. One will be in focus.

Consent: not everyone wants a face on a public page. A group chat is not the public internet. If you post to a feed, ask the adults and do not put other people’s children on a wide network without their parents. A picture of your own tree, table, or street is simpler. A picture of a church service may be unwelcome even when the building is beautiful. Follow the house rule of that room.

Choose Eve or morning, and a ten-minute slot, before the day starts. Use the lights you already have. Turn one lamp toward faces if the tree is the only glow. Take extra frames. Keep the one where someone blinked in the archive, not in the card.

Ask before you post faces. A private album and a public feed are different rooms. The best Christmas picture is usually the third try, when someone has stopped performing and started sitting. Leave the camera on long enough to get that one.

Borrowed pictures and cards

If you need a picture you did not take — a flyer, a blog, a classroom handout — use a source that says you may. Museums and libraries sometimes publish public-domain nativity paintings and old cards. Stock sites sell seasonal photos. A random result in a search box is not permission. Cropping a watermark off is not permission. “It is Christmas” is not permission.

Cards: a photo of your household on the front is a Christmas picture in the oldest domestic sense. Print while shops are open. In 2026, Christmas Day is Friday, 25 December; many printers will already be closed. Mail has its own cutoff if you need the card to arrive before the 24th. The picture can be taken in November and still be a Christmas picture. Snow is optional. The date on the card is not.

Store the files where you will find them next year: a folder with the year in the name. A camera roll named only by month will bury December under everything else. The point of the picture is to still have it when the tree is down.
