Christmas pfp

How it works

Pfp means profile picture. A Christmas pfp is that square with a seasonal overlay: a hat, a border of lights, a tree, snow, a cartoon, or a photograph from a decorated room. You upload it to the account people use to recognise you. You are still the same person. The platform is still the same platform. Christmas Day is still 25 December. In 2026 that date is a Friday. The avatar does not file a deed poll.

A cover photo or banner is a wider image at the top of some profiles. It is not the pfp. The pfp is the small circle or square next to your name in a thread. If friends will only see the tiny circle, a busy nativity scene will collapse into noise. A single motif reads. A collage of twelve ornaments does not.

You can take a new photograph. You can crop an old one and add a frame. You can use an illustration, including a drawing that is not your face, if that is already how the account works. Do not use someone else’s face as if it were yours. Do not use a mark you do not have the right to reproduce as a commercial stamp. A family snapshot you took is yours to crop. A film still is not a free costume.

What belongs in the square

If the account is how colleagues find you, keep the face visible. A hat on the brow is enough. A filter that hides the eyes is a different person in a list of results. If the account is only friends, you can go louder: antlers, a knit, a pet in a bow. If the account is a shop, a Christmas pfp is seasonal branding. Take it down when you no longer mean to look open for December trade.

Face plus one motif: the usual readable pfp. Frame or border: lights, holly, a simple wreath of pixels. Illustration or character: only if that is already your account’s face. Pet or child: only with the consent that photograph already needed.

Text in the avatar: short or none; it will be unread at thumbnail size. Match the crop to a square before you upload. Platforms trim. A group photograph with you at the edge will become a picture of a shoulder. Preview the tiny size, not only the full screen. Lighting in December indoor photos is often yellow; that is the lamp, not a filter you are required to add.

Putting it on, taking it off

Save the current pfp somewhere you can find in January. Upload the Christmas square when you actually want the season to show. Do not change it so often that nobody can tell the account is yours. Revert after the feast, or after New Year’s, or after Epiphany if that is your custom.

If you run more than one account, change only the ones that should look seasonal. A Christmas pfp is a face you can take off in January without an appointment. There is no legal date on which avatars must change. Some people switch on 1 December. Some switch on the first cold night. Some never switch and are still keeping Christmas on the 25th. An avatar that still wears a Santa hat in February is a leftover, not a second feast. The civil morning remains 25 December, with or without a new thumbnail.
