How it works

Shops tag ordinary intimate apparel with Christmas colour, print, or packaging and put it out as a December gift. The garment still has to function as underwear or as sleepwear. A trim of holly on a nightdress does not change sizing. A Santa print on a brief does not change the need for a comfortable band. You buy it the way you buy any similar piece: by measurement, fabric, and the occasion it will actually see.

There are three common uses, and they are not interchangeable. First, under a dress or shirt at a party, where the point is a private joke or a clean line under fabric. Second, as sleepwear on Christmas Eve or the slow morning after. Third, as a gift meant to be opened by one other adult. A piece that works for one of those jobs may fail at the others. Party underwear that itches will not last a long dinner. Sleepwear that is only a ribbon will not last a cold night.

Buying it, gifting it, wearing it

If you are buying for yourself, use the size you already wear in a similar cut, not the size on a mannequin. Check whether the piece is machine-washable. Sequins, glued bows, and stiff netting often survive one evening and then shed. If you need it on 25 December, order or collect it early enough to exchange. Courier delays do not care that it is Christmas week.

Name the occasion: under clothes, sleep, or a private evening. Match the cut to that occasion, then pick the seasonal colour if you still want it. Confirm size from a garment the wearer already finds comfortable.

Read the wash label before you rely on a second wearing. If it is a gift, give the person a way to exchange it without a speech. If you are buying for someone else, ask or choose a retailer with a quiet return. Do not wrap this gift for opening in a room of children or colleagues. Do not treat a “Christmas lingerie” listing as a personality test for the recipient. A warm robe can be the more seasonal kindness. A gift card to a shop they already use is less romantic in films and more usable in life. Desire is not improved by public embarrassment.

If the present needs a gift receipt more than it needs tinsel, you are buying clothing. Size it like clothing.

What the season adds, and what it does not

Red, forest green, cream, and metallic thread are the usual December palette. Winter fabrics — jersey, fleece-backed pieces, longer hems — make more sense in a cold house than a costume that only photographs well. “Christmas” on the label does not make a garment appropriate for every adult relationship. It does not make it appropriate at work. It does not replace a conversation about what someone wants to wear.

After the holiday, treat remaining pieces as ordinary wardrobe or let them go. You do not have to save a printed set for the next 25 December if it only served one night. Store what you keep clean and dry, same as any lingerie, away from the tree’s sap and the candle box. The date on the calendar will return. The elastic may not, if you crush it in a cracker tin.
