Christmas lighting
Christmas lighting is the act of putting light on a house, street, or tree for Christmas. It is the job and the display, not a separate public holiday.

Find the feast date: 25 December in the year you mean. If you meant a city tree, find that city’s posted lighting night and hour. If you meant a house, pick a hanging day that is not a ladder in a storm.
Switch on at dusk or on a timer; switch off on a day you can name. Christmas lightings in the plural are several displays or several nights. A street where every house takes a turn is still one feast. Do not average the nights into a fake civic holiday. Do not treat a lighting night as a bank closure. Banks follow Christmas Day and the observed federal day beside it, not the evening a mayor shook a switch.
Lighting night is when someone threw the switch. Christmas is still the 25th, even if the square was already glowing in November. If you need a countdown, pick the clock: nights until the city’s posted lighting, or nights until 25 December. Mixing them is how a child is told “Christmas is next Friday” when next Friday is only a tree. Name which Friday. The lamps will not mind. The calendar will.
