Christmas in july

How it works

You mark Christmas in July by borrowing December’s food, music, jumpers, and gift jokes and setting them in the middle of the year. In the Northern Hemisphere that means a Christmas party in summer weather. In much of the Southern Hemisphere July is winter, so the same phrase can mean a cold-weather Christmas dinner at the time of year that actually feels like cards and fires, six months away from a hot 25 December.

There is no single official public holiday called Christmas in July on the U.S. federal list. 25 July sits opposite 25 December on the calendar, so some hosts pick that date as a neat halfway mark. Others use any weekend in July, or the whole month for shop displays. If an invitation names a Saturday, that Saturday is the event. The month is the theme.

Dinner in winter, sale in summer

Two uses travel under the same heading and should not be mixed up at the door. A Christmas-in-July dinner is a meal: ham or a roast, pudding, crackers, jumpers, a tree that can survive heat or a small table tree. A Christmas-in-July sale is retail: shops moving stock, cinemas putting on holiday films, radio stations playing carols for a day. You can attend one without the other.

Halfway date some hosts use: 25 July, six months from 25 December. Any July gathering that is explicitly themed as Christmas. Winter Christmas dinners in July in places where December is hot. Shop and media promotions that use the phrase as a sale banner.

If you are hosting, say which you mean. “Bring a jumper” is a party. “Twenty percent off ornaments” is a shop. Guests who arrive in novelty sweaters to a retail tent have been given the wrong brief. If you are a guest, read the invitation for time, food, and whether gifts are expected. A white-elephant cap from December still works in July if everyone agreed.

What it is not

It is not a substitute for 25 December for people who celebrate that date. It does not move church calendars, school holidays, or statutory Christmas closures. It does not make 25 July a federal holiday. You can still go to work on a random Tuesday in July and eat mince pies in the evening. That is the joke, and also the limit.

Christmas in July is December’s wardrobe on a different month. The law still thinks Christmas is the 25th of December. Count the real Christmas the usual way: 25 December. From 25 July that is six months later, which is why the theme exists. From 3 September 2026, Christmas Day 2026 is 113 days away and falls on a Friday; July’s party, if you had one, is already behind you. Plan December on the December date. Use July only if you actually wanted the extra feast or the sale.
