That last line matters if you were asking “when is it Christmas Eve” inside a church that does not use 25 December. Many Orthodox churches celebrate Christmas on 7 January, so their Eve is 6 January. That is still an eve: the night before their Christmas. It is not a second 24 December.
Eve is not the 25th
Travel, school, and workplace notices mix the words. A “closed Christmas Eve and Christmas Day” sign covers two dates. A “Christmas hours” banner may mean only the 25th. Ask which door is locked on which morning. Flights labelled for Christmas Eve leave on the 24th. A 25 December ticket is Christmas Day, even if you board in the small hours and still feel like the night before.
If you are counting sleep until the morning of the 25th, the Eve is the night you are in. Children who are told “tomorrow is Christmas” on the evening of the 24th are being given the right next calendar day. Adults who book a restaurant for “Christmas Eve” and arrive on the 25th are a day late.
Christmas Eve is the 24th. If you need the 25th, say Christmas Day; the night before will not stretch to cover a missed booking. Leap years do not move 24 December. February’s extra day sits months earlier. The weekday of the Eve in a leap year still follows the ordinary seven-day week from 1 January.
