Christmas drinks

Christmas drinks are seasonal beverages served around 25 December: eggnog, mulled wine, hot chocolate, punch, and the house’s own mix. They are not a separate feast day.

How it works

You pour something that belongs to the feast, not to a random Tuesday. Eggnog is a dairy drink, often spiced, sometimes with spirit. Mulled wine is wine warmed with spice. Hot chocolate is cocoa in milk or water. Punch is a bowl that several people share. Wassail, in English custom, is a hot spiced drink, often cider or ale. None of these is required by civil law. Christmas Day is still 25 December. In 2026 that is a Friday. The glass does not move the date.

Alcohol is optional. Children, drivers, and people who do not drink still sit at the table. A pot of cocoa and a jug of spiced apple juice are Christmas drinks when they are served for that feast. A bottle of spirit left on a sideboard is inventory. Name which jug is which, and do not leave a ladle in a bowl that looks like juice and is not.

Food safety is ordinary kitchen sense. Eggnog made with raw eggs is a raw-egg drink. Use a cooked custard base or pasteurized eggs if that is the risk you are managing. Dairy sits badly in a warm room. Keep cold drinks cold and hot drinks hot. A bowl that has been out all afternoon is a leftover problem, not a centrepiece.

What people actually pour

Households repeat what they already know. One house always has eggnog. One always has mulled wine. One has fizzy grape juice in the same glasses as the adults so nobody has to explain the difference at the table. Hotel bars and restaurants print a short seasonal list in December: the same families of drink, priced as a menu. A chain’s “holiday spice latte” is a product name. It is not a liturgy.

Eggnog: dairy, sugar, spice; spirit only if you add it on purpose. Mulled wine or similar spiced wine: served warm, not boiled into syrup unless you meant to. Hot chocolate or cocoa: the usual non-alcoholic winter cup.

Punch or cup: a shared bowl; label it if it is alcoholic. Coffee, tea, and water: still allowed on 25 December. If you are cooking for a mixed table, put the spirit in a bottle on the side, not in the only jug. People can add it. They cannot take it out. If someone is pregnant, taking medicine, or driving home, the non-alcoholic jug is the civil one. A toast does not require ethanol. It requires a glass and a sentence.

Serving without a wreck

Decide hot or cold before you set the table. Warm wine in a pan that can come off the heat. Keep open flame, a gas ring, and a trailing sleeve apart from a full pot. Put cups that will not crack on a cold saucer or a hot mug as the drink requires.

Offer water. Spiced drinks are still thirsty work. Stop pouring for the road. The feast is at the house; the car is not a second sitting. If the punch needs a ladle and a warning, it is a Christmas drink. If it needs a laboratory, you have left the party.

Christmas Eve on 24 December is a working night for many kitchens and a drinking night for some living rooms. The 25th is the Day. A drink on the 24th is an Eve drink. A drink on the 26th is a leftover, or Boxing Day if you keep that date. None of those glasses is a public holiday of its own. Wash the cups when the bowl is empty. The calendar will still say 25 December in the morning.

Questions and answers

What counts as a Christmas drink?
A beverage served for the Christmas season: eggnog, mulled wine, cocoa, punch, and whatever your table actually pours. The date of the feast is still 25 December.
Do they have to contain alcohol?
No. Cocoa, juice, tea, and alcohol-free punches are Christmas drinks when you serve them as such.
Is eggnog safe with raw eggs?
Raw eggs carry the ordinary risk of raw egg. Use a cooked base or pasteurized eggs if you need to avoid that risk.
