Christmas coloring sheets

How it works

Christmas coloring sheet in the singular is the same object as the plural. It is a page, usually letter-size, with black outlines and empty shapes. A child or an adult fills the shapes. The scene is almost always the December feast: a tree, Santa, a reindeer, a wreath, a nativity, a village, a stocking. The sheet does not tell you when Christmas is. Christmas Day is 25 December. Christmas Eve is 24 December. The sheet is something to do in the days around those dates, on a wet afternoon, or in a classroom in December.

Home printers make this a household craft. Schools use stacks of them in the last week before a break. Churches use nativity outlines. Libraries sometimes put a bowl of crayons next to a pile of pages. None of that is a public holiday. The federal holiday in the United States is still Christmas Day.

What to print

Choose the outline for the hand that will hold the crayon. Fine filigree looks rich on a screen and collapses under a blunt red wax stick. Simple shapes, one main object, a little background: that is a finishable page. A sheet that is really an advertisement with a logo in the corner is a flyer, not a coloring sheet.

Pick a scene that matches the house: tree and gifts, or a nativity, or a winter animal. Do not print a horror-movie “grinch” page for a child who wanted a star. Check that you may print it. Free classroom use and free commercial use are different sentences.

Print a test page. If the lines are grey and broken, the file is a photo, not a drawing. Put newspaper under the sheet if the marker is wet. The table is not the craft. You can print the same tree ten times. The second copy is not a waste; it is how a table of cousins all get a page. Colour on the back if the paper is thin and the first side bled. There is no prize for a “correct” green. The sheet is done when the crayon is tired, not when the 25th arrives.

A quiet December hour

Coloring is indoor winter work in the north: early dark, a table, a short task that does not need a screen. In a southern December it is still the same paper, just less of a snow excuse. It fits a wait — for guests, for a service, for a late afternoon on the 24th. It does not replace the meal or the date.

If you wanted christmas colors, that is the palette. If you wanted this page, you wanted the blank drawing. Keep the two jobs apart: a colour guide tells you red and green; a coloring sheet gives you a place to put them. Finished pages can hang on a fridge until the tree comes down. Then they are paper again.
