Christmas candles

How it works

You light a candle because the room should look like winter evening, or because a service asks for it. Tapers, pillars, tea lights, and jar candles all count. Battery candles count as candles in the decorative sense and not as fire. Christmas Day is 25 December. In 2026 that date is a Friday. A candle on the 24th is an Eve light. A candle on the 25th is a Day light. Neither one closes a bank.

Advent, in Western churches, is the season of four Sundays before Christmas. In 2026 those Sundays are 29 November, then 6, 13, and 20 December. An Advent wreath holds four candles, one lighted on each of those Sundays, with previous weeks left burning so that the fourth Sunday shows four flames. Many churches use purple or blue for three Sundays and rose on the third; some add a white candle for Christmas. That sequence is a devotion. It is not a civil lighting ordinance. The Advent wreath sits on a table. It is not a door decoration with a live flame.

Christmas Eve services in many churches are candlelight services: a room of handheld tapers at night on the 24th. Those flames are a liturgy, and they are still fire. Follow the ushers. Hold the candle upright. Do not tip wax onto a stranger’s hair. Extinguish as instructed before you reach the door and the wind.

Table light, tree light, and church light

A table candle is atmosphere for a meal. Keep it stable, away from sleeves, paper crowns, and trailing greenery. A window candle is a display toward the street; real wax in a curtain is a bad display. Tree candles in the old sense are tapers on branches. That practice is a fire load on a dry fir. Electric tree lights exist because of that problem. If you still want the look of candle-flame on a tree, use the electric kind unless you know exactly what you are doing and have water to hand.

Tea lights: small, hot underneath, easy to forget on a sideboard. Battery candles: the same silhouette without the open flame. Christingle services, common in British churches in Advent or around Christmas, use an orange with a candle, a red ribbon, and sweets on sticks. The candle is still a candle. Children holding fruit and flame need adults who are actually watching. A battery Christingle is allowed if the parish says so. Tradition is not a requirement to scorch a sleeve.

Flame, fake flame, and smoke

Never leave a burning candle in an empty room. Keep wax away from trees, wreaths, curtains, and wrapping paper. Use a proper holder. A bottle is not a holder unless it is stable and will not roll. Put tea lights on a heat-safe dish; the metal cup gets hot.

Choose battery candles for children, for pets, and for windows you will not watch. An unattended candle is not ambience. It is a small fire looking for a curtain. Blow them out when the meal is over. Do not go to bed on a “tiny” flame. Smoke alarms are for the house all year; December is not a holiday from them. Take the Advent wreath’s candles down when the greens dry, even if a Sunday remains, if the ring has become tinder. The Sundays will still have been counted. The feast on Friday 25 December 2026 does not need a house fire as proof.
