Christmas bow

How it works

A bow is loops of ribbon pinched in the middle so they read as a flower, a knot, or a burst. Tails hang down. The centre is wrapped or wired so the loops cannot walk apart. On a parcel, the bow sits where the eye lands: top centre, or a corner if the box is large. On a wreath, it sits at the bottom or the top by house taste. On a tree, a few large bows can replace a dozen small ones, or a single bow can be the topper.

Christmas colour is a choice on the spool: red, gold, tartan, white, kraft. The knot does not become a Christmas bow because it is December. It becomes one because you put it on a Christmas object. The same wired tartan on a summer hat is not a Christmas bow. The calendar does not live in the ribbon. The object does.

Ready-made bows exist: pull bows with inner strings, foam-centred bursts, twist-tie florists’ bows sold in bags. Handmade bows exist because wired ribbon can be shaped after you tie it. Both are legitimate. A glued burst that cannot be untied is still a bow. It is just a single-use one.

Wired ribbon, pull bows, and a simple knot

Wired ribbon has a thin wire in each edge. You pinch a centre, build matching loops left and right, and lock the pinch with florist wire or a pipe cleaner. Then you fluff. The wire is why a wreath bow still looks like a wreath bow on 23 December after a week of door slams. Unwired satin collapses unless the loops are small or starched.

Leave two tails. Form a small centre loop if you want a button in the middle. Add loops in pairs, same length each side, twisting the ribbon so the right face stays out. Stop before the pinch is thicker than your grip. Extra loops are vanity if they will not cinch.

Wrap florist wire tight at the pinch, twist at the back, and fold the sharp ends in. Fluff each loop. Dovetail the tails by folding and cutting a notch. Attach to gift, wreath, or stem. A pull bow is already looped inside a sleeve. You pull the two inner ribbons and the loops gather. It is the right tool for twenty identical party favours and the wrong tool if you wanted a tartan that matches the wrapping. A classic two-loop knot — the “shoelace” on a present — is enough for a book. Do not build a wreath bow on a paperback.

Width follows the object. Narrow ribbon on a large wreath looks like string. A hand-width ribbon on a jewellery box looks like a hat. If you layer two ribbons, put the wider one in the larger loops and the thinner one as a centre wrap so the wire does not show.

Where it belongs, and where it fights

Tape a light bow to paper. Tie a heavy bow into the same ribbon that wraps the box, or wire it to the ribbon. Hot glue on gift wrap fails in a cold porch. On fresh greenery, wire the bow into the wreath frame so wind cannot take it down the street. On a tree, keep bows away from candles and from lights that run hot; ribbon is cloth.

Pets eat curling ribbon. Children swallow the small plastic centres of bargain bursts. If either will be under the tree, use a wired cloth bow you can see in a fist. Curling ribbon tails are pretty in a photograph and grim in a gut. That is not a statistic. It is a reason to cut the curls short or skip them.

If the bow needs a second adult and a swear jar, you have too many loops or not enough wire. Cinch first. Fluff second. After Twelfth Night, or whenever your house undresses the tree, bows of wired ribbon can be crushed flat in a box and reshaped next year. Pull bows and glued bursts are rubbish. Store tartan dry. A Christmas bow that survives to the next 25 December is a tool. One that does not is still allowed; the feast does not grade your ribbon.
