How it works

You open one compartment a day. Behind it is a picture, a verse, a chocolate, a tea bag, a toy, or a folded note. The next door stays shut until the next morning. The object is a queue. Cheating is opening Tuesday on Monday. The calendar will not stop you. The point of the object is that you do.

Twenty-four doors, 1 December through 24 December, is the common commercial shape. Christmas Eve is the last opening. Christmas Day then stands alone. Some calendars add a twenty-fifth door for the 25th. Some start on Advent Sunday instead of on the 1st. Those are different rules. Read the numbering on the object in your hands, not a memory of last year’s tin.

Advent itself is a church season, not a cardboard box. In Western churches it begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas Day. In 2026 that Sunday is 29 November. The season is about four weeks long, and its length in days changes because Christmas does not always fall on the same weekday. A chocolate calendar with a fixed 1–24 grid is a popular cousin of that season. It is not the same instrument as an Advent wreath with four Sunday candles.

Church season and cardboard month

The word Advent comes from Latin for arrival. The church season prepares for Christmas. Purple or violet is a common liturgical colour; rose may appear on the third Sunday, Gaudete. A wreath with four candles, one lit each Sunday, is a household and church marker of those weeks. Johann Hinrich Wichern used a candle-marked wreath for children in Hamburg in the nineteenth century. That is a light you tend once a week, not a door you pick every morning.

Printed paper calendars with pictures, and later with little doors, became a German commercial product in the early twentieth century and then travelled. Chocolate behind the doors is a later filling, not the original job of the page. A picture, a Bible verse, or a paper scene is still an Advent calendar. A luxury box of cosmetics with twenty-four drawers is using the same countdown shape for a different cargo.

Church Advent: starts on Advent Sunday (29 November in 2026) and runs to Christmas. Door calendar: usually 1–24 December, last door on Christmas Eve. Wreath: four Sundays, four candles, not twenty-four chocolates.

Homemade bags or envelopes: the same daily rule if you number them and wait. If you make one, number the pockets before you fill them. A child who finds door 24 on the 3rd has not learned patience; they have learned that the box was badly closed. Put the largest thing behind the last number, or do not, but decide before 1 December. Refilling a reusable wooden house is next year’s work. Throw away the chocolate calendar when the last door is empty. Do not store a greasy tray “for next year.”

How to run one without wrecking the wait

Open in the morning if mornings are when the household is together. Open at supper if that is the only shared hour. The calendar does not care. What it cannot survive is two people opening the same door, or a skip that is never caught up. If you miss the 7th, open the 7th on the 8th and then the 8th, or skip the missed chocolate and say so. Silent theft from the back of the box is how the 24th arrives empty.

Allergies, sugar, and small parts are ordinary household facts. A chocolate calendar is food. A Lego or jewellery calendar is not food. A beauty calendar may be adult cargo in a house with small hands. Put it where those hands cannot reach, or choose pictures.

A calendar with twenty-four shut doors is still only a wait. The 25th is not hiding in door 18. On Christmas Day the calendar’s job is over. The feast is the day, not a leftover drawer. If a twenty-fifth door exists, open it. If it does not, stop looking. The object was a path. You have arrived.
