Chinese year of the dragon
The Chinese year of the dragon is the Dragon animal year on the lunisolar cycle. The last one covered most of 2024; the next one begins in 2036. It is not the number on a passport.
what is chinese new year
Chinese New Year, Spring Festival, is the first day of the traditional lunisolar year. It lands on a new moon between late January and mid-February. The eve before that morning is the reunion dinner. The days that follow, through the Lantern Festival on the fifteenth lunar day, are the festival season. 1 January is a different new year: the Gregorian civil one, used for forms, tickets, and school years.
The animal year changes on that lunar first day, not on 1 January. The Dragon year most people still mean began on 10 February 2024 and ran until 28 January 2025. After that came a Snake year, then, on 17 February 2026, a Horse year. On 3 September 2026 you are not in a Dragon year. You are in a Horse year. “Is today Chinese New Year” is a separate question: on 3 September 2026 the answer is no. The next Spring Festival is 6 February 2027, a Goat year, still not a Dragon.
Dragon is the only mythical creature in the twelve. Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig are ordinary animals. Dragon is the exception, which is why the year attracts more decoration, more merchandise, and more confusion with European dragon stories. The Chinese festival dragon in a dance is a long body on poles, not a Western hoard-guarding beast. The holiday does not require you to settle that art-history argument. It requires you to know which lunar year you are actually in.
Which years are Dragon years
The animals repeat every twelve years. Dragon years in living memory include 2012, 2000, 1988, 1976, and 1964. After 2024 the next Dragon year is 2036. If you were born in January or early February of a Gregorian Dragon year, check the Spring Festival date of that year before you claim the animal. A birth before the lunar new year belongs to the previous animal.
Folk talk calls Dragon years especially lucky. That is folklore. It is not a forecast, and it is not a reason a civil office stays closed for twelve months. What closed in 2024 around the festival was the public holiday block for that Spring Festival, not the entire Dragon year. A Dragon toy sold in 2026 is leftover branding. It does not roll the calendar back to 2024.
Last Dragon year: 10 February 2024 to 28 January 2025. Now, 3 September 2026: Horse year, since 17 February 2026. Next Spring Festival: 6 February 2027, Goat, not Dragon. Next Dragon year: 2036. Dragon is the mythical animal in the twelve; the others are ordinary creatures.
The Dragon is the only animal on the cycle that never lived in a field. That is the charm, and the mix-up, in one creature.
How to talk about a Dragon year after it has closed
If you are dating a birth, write the civil date and, if asked, the animal that matches the lunar new year of that birth. If you are greeting someone, do not say “happy Dragon year” in 2026 unless you are remembering 2024 on purpose. The live greeting in 2026 is a Horse-year greeting during the festival season, and an ordinary hello the rest of the time.
If a shop is still selling Dragon paper in September 2026, that is stock. It is not evidence that the year returned. If a relative insists they are “a Dragon” because they like the creature, that is taste. The cycle does not take requests. The next time the calendar will wear the Dragon again is 2036, at whichever new moon that Spring Festival uses.
Questions and answers

- No. On 3 September 2026 it is the Year of the Horse. The last Dragon year ended 28 January 2025.
- When is the next Year of the Dragon?
- 2036. Dragon years return every twelve years. 2012 was the one before 2024.
- Is Chinese New Year in a Dragon year different from other years?
- The date still follows the new moon. The animal on the decorations changes. The reunion, the eve, and the Lantern Festival stay the festival’s spine.
