Keep the stretch through the fifteenth night if the family still does; the office may already be back. Lion dances, temple fairs, and flower markets are public versions of the same week. They are not homework. A diaspora household that cooks one meal and video-calls grandparents is still keeping the festival. A person who buys a paper dragon in a mall in July is shopping. A tradition you only photograph, and never sit through, is a costume.

What is not a tradition just because it is red

A January 1 party hat is a civil-year custom. A Christmas stocking dyed crimson is still Christmas. Workplace “lunar lunches” in March can be kind and still miss the eve. The animal year is a twelve-year cycle that turns on the new moon, not a personality test sold beside the envelopes. If a shop bundles every red object into one “Chinese New Year traditions” crate, that is retail. Take what your table uses. Leave the rest.

Some folk rules say not to sweep on the first day, not to break crockery, not to say unlucky words. Those are household superstitions with wide reach. They are not statutes. A broken bowl is an accident. The year does not void because a broom came out. Follow the elders in the room you are actually in, not a list copied from a stranger’s corridor.
