Chinese New Year is Spring Festival: the first day of the first lunisolar month. It falls between late January and mid-February on the Gregorian chart. The 2026 celebration opened Tuesday 17 February, when the Horse year began. Thursday 3 September 2026 is not that morning. Count one hundred and fifty-six days from this Thursday and you reach Saturday 6 February 2027, when a Goat year opens. The celebration is a stretch, not a single sunrise: eve, first days, visits, and often the fifteenth night.

Is today Chinese New Year only on that converted first day. Asking “is today China New Year” does not change the moon. Both answers on 3 September 2026 are no. A September barbecue with red napkins is a barbecue. It is not the festival. 1 January remains the civil new year used on tickets. The celebration described here does not move to New Year’s Eve in December because the office party already had hats.

What the household week actually holds

The work starts before the new moon. Families clean so the year does not open on last year’s dust. New couplets and a fu character go on the door. The reunion dinner on the eve is the meal the travel is for: whoever can get home, gets home. Northern tables often serve dumplings. Nian gao appears in many southern kitchens. Fish is a pun on surplus, not a required species. New clothes mark a start. Red envelopes go to children and younger relatives. Staying up through the turn of the day is an old household watch. Firecrackers are the old noise against the nian-beast story; where a city bans them, the ban is the law and the story is still the story.

Clean and hang new door paper before the first day, not after you are already late for the train. Eat the reunion meal on the eve if that is the house rule, not on a random Friday in March. Give red packets during the visits of the season, to the people your family actually gives them to.

Call on elders first if that is the custom; cousins can wait an hour. Keep through the fifteenth night if the family still does; the office may already be back. Lion dances, temple fairs, and flower markets are the public version of the same week. A diaspora household that cooks one meal and video-calls grandparents is still keeping the festival. A person who buys a plastic dragon in July is shopping. Workplace “lunar lunches” in March can be kind and still miss the eve. The animal year is a twelve-year cycle that turns on the new moon, not a personality quiz sold beside the envelopes.

A celebration you only photograph from the doorway, and never sit through, is a parade for other people’s hunger.

Public show versus a mall display

Cities with Chinese communities put dragons on main streets in the festival week. That is a civic celebration. It does not make 1 January into Chunjie, and it does not require every passer-by to take a red envelope. Inside China the leave block around Spring Festival is a travel season arranged for that year. Trains fill. Make-up workdays may sit before or after. Those swapped weekdays are labour notices. They are not extra reunion nights. If you need a counter’s hours, read that year’s holiday notice. If you need the meal, read the family clock: eve, then visits.

Do not stack Christmas red, Gregorian party hats, and couplets in one crate and call the crate authentic. You may like the look. The calendars still disagree. From 3 September 2026 the next celebration to plan is the stretch around 6 February 2027. The Horse year runs until 5 February 2027. Greeting someone in September with “Happy New Year” as if Chunjie were still in progress is a late caption. Greeting them in early February 2027, on the eve and after, is the week the celebration belongs to.
