Chinese national day holiday
Chinese National Day is 1 October, marking the 1949 founding of the People’s Republic of China. The mainland holiday is usually stretched into a Golden Week of consecutive days off.
what national day is it today
If you asked “what national day is it today” and meant China’s, the date is 1 October every year. On Thursday 3 September 2026 that square has not yet arrived. 1 October 2026 is Thursday 1 October, 28 days from 3 September. In 2027, 1 October is a Friday. The anniversary does not move. The cluster of days off around it does.
Mao Zedong proclaimed the People’s Republic of China on 1 October 1949 in Beijing. The civil holiday on the mainland is National Day. Hong Kong and Macau also mark 1 October as a public holiday of the PRC. “Chinese national day,” “national chinese day,” and “Chinese National Day holiday” are the same anniversary in English searches. They are not a U.S. unofficial food day, and they are not Taiwan’s National Day on 10 October, which commemorates 1911 and is a different calendar.
The legal core on the mainland is a short statutory holiday that the State Council commonly expands, by moving weekend rest, into seven consecutive days. That expanded block is the October Golden Week. Japan’s Golden Week is a different pile of dates in late April and early May. Do not book a Tokyo hotel for 1 October because an English page said “Golden Week.”
Golden Week is the stretch, not the name
For 2026 the State Council arrangement runs the National Day Golden Week from Thursday 1 October through Wednesday 7 October. Make-up workdays — ordinary work on what would have been weekend rest — are Sunday 20 September and Saturday 10 October. Mid-Autumn Festival in 2026 is a separate short break, 25–27 September, not merged into October. Monday 28 through Wednesday 30 September are ordinary workdays on that notice.
National Day: 1 October every year (Thursday in 2026). Mainland Golden Week 2026: 1–7 October. Make-up workdays 2026: 20 September and 10 October. Same anniversary, other English names: Chinese national day; national chinese day.
Not the same: Taiwan 10 October; Japan’s spring Golden Week. Travel, trains, and tourist sites follow the week, not only the Thursday. The return crush sits on the last holiday day and the day after. A shop in a quiet town may keep its own shutter. A government counter follows the notice. Confirm the year you will travel; the State Council publishes each year’s grid in the previous autumn.
One October morning is the founding date. Seven days off is a scheduling trick. Call the Thursday the holiday and the week the traffic.
National Chinese Day is the same date
English queries drop words. “National chinese day” is still 1 October, still 1949, still the PRC anniversary. It is not a separate Tuesday invented for a hashtag. It is not Singapore’s National Day on 9 August, not Malaysia’s on 31 August, not a Chinatown street fair in a U.S. city unless that city printed its own festival weekend. A local parade in October can honour the date. The parade’s Saturday is a parade Saturday. The national day remains 1 October.
If you are counting from 3 September 2026, there are 28 days until Thursday 1 October and 34 days until the last Golden Week day on 7 October. After 7 October the next National Day is 1 October 2027. The countdown does not care whether you said “holiday,” “national day,” or “national chinese day.” The square is the same.
