Chinese calendar
The Chinese calendar is lunisolar: months follow the moon, and extra months keep the year lined up with the seasons. Chinese New Year is the first day of the first lunar month, not 1 January.

Chinese New Year, Spring Festival, is day one of lunar month one. It falls between about 21 January and 20 February on the Gregorian chart because that is where the winter new moon that starts the year sits. In 2026 it was 17 February. In 2027 it is 6 February. Work, school, and passports in China still use the Gregorian year number. The festival, the animal year, and traditional birth dates use this other clock.
A lunar month is a moon cycle, so it is shorter than a Gregorian month. Without a leap month the seasons would drift. The calendar inserts an extra month in some years so harvests and solar terms stay in the right part of the year. That is why two people can say “the second month” and mean different stretches if one of them is counting a leap month. For dating a birthday, you need the lunar month and day, plus whether that year had a leap month, not a guess from the Western month alone.
The civil form in a hospital, a visa, or a school still wants day–month–year in Gregorian figures. The traditional form wants the lunar date and often the hour. Both can describe the same birth. They are not two births.
Chinese calendar 1986 and 1971
Chinese calendar 1986 is the Gregorian year 1986 read against the lunar year that overlapped it. Spring Festival 1986 was 9 February, a Sunday, the start of a Tiger year. Anyone born from 1 January 1986 through 8 February 1986 was still in the previous animal year, the Ox, because the new moon had not yet turned. From 9 February 1986 the Tiger year ran until the next new year, 29 January 1987, when the Rabbit year began.
Chinese calendar 1971 works the same way. Spring Festival 1971 was 27 January, a Wednesday, the start of a Pig year. Births from 1 January 1971 through 26 January 1971 were still Dog, the year that had begun on 6 February 1970. From 27 January 1971 the Pig year ran until 14 February 1972. A form that only asks “1971” cannot tell Ox from Tiger or Dog from Pig. The animal follows the new year, not the January digit.
Find the Spring Festival date of that Gregorian year. If the birthday is on or after that date, the animal is that new year’s animal. If the birthday is earlier in January or early February, it still belongs to last year’s animal. Write the Gregorian date on modern paperwork either way.
Animals and the birth calendar
Chinese calendar animals are a twelve-year cycle: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig. 2026 after 17 February is Horse. The cycle does not skip. It also does not start on 1 January. Two children born in the same Gregorian year can hold two animals if the new year fell between them.
A Chinese birth calendar in popular English often means one of two different tools. The first is simply converting a birth date to a lunar date and an animal, as above. That conversion is a calendar job. The second is the folk “gender chart” that claims to guess a baby’s sex from the mother’s age and the lunar month of conception. That chart is folklore, not a medical test and not a substitute for clinical care. It does not become true because it is printed on red paper. If you needed the animal and the lunar birthday, use the new-year rule. If you needed a health fact, use a clinic.
The animal year changes at the new moon, not when the office calendar flips to January. Hour pillars and the four-column birth chart used in traditional almanacs are a finer reading of the same lunisolar clock, including the two-hour watch in which someone was born. They are not required to fill a passport. They are required only if the question you were asked was that chart, not “what year is 1986.”
