How it works

The date is a birthday, not a floating Monday. Chávez was born 31 March 1927 and died 23 April 1993. He and Dolores Huerta built the National Farm Workers Association, which became the United Farm Workers. The day was meant to mark farm-labor rights and, in many schools, a stretch of community service rather than a picnic. Because it is a calendar date, 31 March 2026 was a Tuesday and 31 March 2027 is a Wednesday. When 31 March falls on a Sunday, a state that closes for the holiday may observe a weekday instead; that is a local observed-day rule, not a move of the birthday.

It is not Christmas for labor, and it is not a nationwide bank close. Federal offices, the Postal Service, and Federal Reserve holidays follow their own list. 31 March is on that list only if some other federal mark happens to share it, which it does not. A closed California counter and an open New York counter can be both correct on the same morning.

In 2026 California changed the official name of the 31 March state holiday to Farmworkers Day after public allegations against Chávez. Colorado also used Farm Workers Day on that date for 2026. People still type Cesar Chavez Day because that is the name the date wore for years and the name still on older planners. The square on the wall is still 31 March. The title on a state personnel memo may not be.

What actually closes

Read the jurisdiction in front of you. California state offices have used 31 March as a paid holiday. City halls, school districts, courts, and libraries decide on their own calendars; some close, some stay open with programs, some ignore the date. A grocery, a port, and a farm do not share one shutter. If you needed a DMV, a classroom, or a union hall, look at that body’s posted hours for that 31 March, under whatever name it is using this year.

A state can rename the holiday and still keep the thirty-first of March. The birthday does not move with the title.

How to mark the date without mixing clocks

If you are writing a school lesson, the labor history is the grape strikes, the boycott, the 1975 California Agricultural Labor Relations Act, and Huerta’s role beside him. If you are writing a state-office out-of-office line, use the name your personnel calendar now prints. If you are asking whether “today is Cesar Chavez Day,” the honest short answer on 31 March is: it is the birthday date; in California the paid holiday is now titled Farmworkers Day. On any other date the answer is no.

Service projects were the civic habit attached to the day in many districts: a few hours of work offered in the name of the farm-labor movement. That habit does not require a parade, and a parade does not replace it. A closed office is a staffing fact. An open field is still an ordinary workday for people picking food. Do not treat a state holiday table as a description of farm schedules. They were never the same clock.
