Calendar week
A calendar week is seven days with a number on the year. ISO weeks start Monday; week 1 contains the year’s first Thursday. Other calendars start Sunday and number the year differently.
what week number is.it
What week number is.it depends on the numbering system, not on the weather. On the ISO 8601 calendar used in most business software and in much of Europe, weeks run Monday through Sunday. Week 1 is the week that contains the first Thursday of January, which is also the week that contains 4 January. 28 December is always in the last week of its ISO year. There is no week 0.
On 3 September 2026, a Thursday, the ISO week number is 36. 2026 is a 53-week ISO year because 1 January 2026 is a Thursday. Those two facts are for this year. Next year you look again. A wall planner that starts the week on Sunday can print a different number for the same Saturday. The days did not move. The label did.
Work lives on week numbers. Timesheets, sprints, manufacturing date codes, and “week 36” in a project log all assume a system. If one office uses ISO and another uses a Sunday-start week that treats 1 January as week 1 no matter the weekday, January reports will disagree by one. That fight is not about who can count to seven. It is about which morning begins the week.
ISO / many European planners: Monday start; week 1 holds the first Thursday (and 4 January). Common U.S. wall calendars: Sunday start; week 1 often holds 1 January. Excel WEEKNUM defaults to a Sunday-start count unless you change it; ISOWEEKNUM follows ISO. A year has 52 ISO weeks, or 53 when the Thursday rule leaves a leftover week.
Number of week calendar, on the page and in the sheet
Number of week calendar, number week calendar, week number on calendar, and week number in calendar are four searches for the same printed digit. On a paper calendar the digit often sits in the left margin of the row. On a phone it sits in a setting you have to turn on. If the setting is off, there is no week number on calendar until you enable it. The week still exists. The label is optional decoration until payroll needs it.
Week number in calendar for a shift roster should match the system your payroll already uses. Do not mix an ISO week from a European parent company with a Sunday week from a local wall grid and then wonder why overtime landed in the “wrong” week. Write the rule once: which day starts the week, and which week is week 1. Then number every row the same way. A handwritten “W36” that means two different spans in two departments is how a calendar week becomes an argument.
If two planners disagree by one week in January, they are not both broken. They started the year on different mornings. ISO week-numbering years can disagree with Gregorian years at the boundary. Monday 29 December 2025 is already 2026-W01 under ISO, because that week contains Thursday 1 January 2026. File names, invoices, and “week 1 of 2026” meetings should use the ISO year if they use the ISO week. Mixing 2025 in the date with 2026 in the week code is legal and confusing. Say which year the week belongs to.
Questions and answers
- What week number is it right now under ISO?
- On 3 September 2026 it is ISO week 36. The number advances on Monday in that system.
- Why does my U.S. calendar show a different week?
- It may start the week on Sunday and treat the week of 1 January as week 1. ISO starts Monday and uses the first-Thursday rule.
- How many weeks are in a calendar year?
- ISO years have 52 or 53 weeks. 2026 has 53. A Sunday-start count can land on a different total because week 1 is defined differently.
