Calculate days between dates

To calculate how many days lie between two dates, subtract the earlier civil date from the later one. The usual figure is the number of midnights crossed, which does not count both endpoints.

how many days in between two dates

How many days in between two dates is a span, not a guest list. From 1 June to 3 June you cross two midnights: the night of the 1st and the night of the 2nd. People also say calculate number of days between dates, calculate how many days between dates, and calculate # of days between dates for the same subtraction. Say whether you want that exclusive span or an inclusive count of calendar squares.

The exclusive span matches “how long until.” If today is 3 September 2026 and the target is 10 September 2026, seven midnights sit between them. The inclusive list of dates from the 3rd through the 10th is eight squares. Mixing those two answers is the most common off-by-one in the whole subject.

Calculate dates between days is the same job with the words swapped. You still need two dates, an order, and a rule for the endpoints. Without the rule, two honest people will disagree by one and both will be right about a different question.

Order matters. Days between 10 June and 1 June are the same distance as days between 1 June and 10 June if you only want a length. If you want a direction, keep the sign, or write “before” and “after” in words so the minus sign does not have to do the talking.

Inclusive lists versus elapsed nights

Pick the rule before you pick the tool. Elapsed days: later date minus earlier date. 1 June to 30 June is 29. Inclusive dates: elapsed days plus one. 1 June through 30 June is 30 squares, which is why June has 30 days.

Nights away: often the elapsed figure, the way a two-night stay spans three dates on a hotel card. Age in days: elapsed days from the birth date to today, not inclusive squares, unless a form asked for something else.

Hotel cards and wall calendars train opposite instincts. A stay that begins 1 June and ends 3 June occupies three dates and two nights. A countdown that begins 1 June and ends 3 June occupies two elapsed days. Write “nights” or “dates” if the number will be used by anyone else.

Calculate dates between days sometimes means “list the dates,” not “return a number.” Listing 2 June and 3 June as the dates between 1 June and 4 June is an exclusive list of the interior squares. Listing 1 through 4 is inclusive. Name which list you are making. The hash sign in calculate # of days between dates does not decide this. You do.

Leap days, months, and time zones

Month lengths are not equal, so you cannot multiply months by 30 and call it a day count. February is 28 or 29. June is 30. July is 31. A span from 28 January to 3 March is different in a leap year than in a common year because 29 February either exists or does not. Count dates, or use a date library. Do not average the months.

If the two dates sit in different time zones, convert both to the same zone before you subtract, or work in dates only and ignore clock time. A timestamp in Auckland and a timestamp in Honolulu on “the same” evening can already be different civil dates. Mixing them produces a day count that belongs to nobody.

If two counts differ by one, you are probably arguing about whether to invite both endpoints to the party. Do not convert years to days by multiplying by 365 unless you are sketching. Ten years from 1 January 2000 to 1 January 2010 enclose three leap days and therefore 3,653 days, not 3,650. Ten years from 1 January 2001 to 1 January 2011 enclose two leap days and 3,652 days. The year count is ten both times. The day count is not.

Questions and answers

Do I count the start date and the end date?
Only if you want an inclusive list of squares. The usual “days between” figure counts the nights in between, not both endpoints.
Why is my answer one day off from someone else’s?
One of you used elapsed days and the other used inclusive dates. Agree on the rule, then subtract again.
Does a leap day change the count?
Yes, if 29 February sits inside the span. It does not change the count if the span never includes that date.

10 year anniversary

A 10 year anniversary is the same month and day ten civil years after the original date. If that day does not exist in the later year, pick 28 February or 1 March and say which.

10,000 days is a little more than 27 years: 27 × 365 = 9,855 days, so 145 days remain if you ignore leap days.
