Byu semester dates

How it works

Count from the first day of class, not from move-in. New Student Orientation sits on the days just before the start: 28, 29, 31 August and 1 September 2026 for fall; 4–5 January 2027 for winter. Orientation is not instruction. The start of classes is the date that begins the term count.

Fall and winter each split into two terms inside the full semester. You can take a full-semester course or a first-term or second-term course. Add/drop, withdraw, and last-day dates differ for those lengths. A full-semester calendar is not a first-term calendar with extra weeks glued on; the registrar publishes both.

This page is Provo. BYU–Idaho and BYU–Hawaii print their own dates. If your housing contract or job is on another campus, do not borrow Provo’s start day.

Fall 2026 and winter 2027, counted

Fall 2026 instruction begins 2 September. Labor Day is 7 September. The add/drop deadline for the full semester and first term is 10 September. First-term withdraw is 7 October. First term ends 20 October; second term begins 21 October. Second-term add/drop is 28 October. The withdraw deadline for the full semester and second term is 24 November. 25 November is a no-class day. Thanksgiving is 26 November, with 27 November also a Thanksgiving holiday. Last day of class is 10 December. Exam preparation is 11 December. Final exams run 12–17 December.

From 2 September 2026 to last class on 10 December is 99 days. That span includes Labor Day, the Thanksgiving break, and the no-class day. It does not include the exam week that follows. Winter 2027 begins 6 January. Add/drop for the full semester and first term is 13 January. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is 18 January. First-term withdraw is 10 February. Presidents’ Day is 15 February, with Monday instruction on 16 February. First term ends 24 February; second term begins 25 February. Second-term add/drop is 4 March. 19 March is a no-class day. Withdraw for the full semester and second term is 1 April. Last day of class is 14 April. Exam preparation is 15 April. Finals run 16–21 April. Commencement is 22 April.

From 6 January 2027 to last class on 14 April is 98 days. Monday instruction on 16 February is a make-up pattern: the university keeps a Monday timetable on a Tuesday after the holiday. Count that day as a Monday class meeting, not as an extra Tuesday.

Spring and summer 2027

Spring 2027 is shorter. Classes begin 27 April after orientation on 26 April. Add/drop is 4 May. Memorial Day is 31 May. Spring term withdraw is 1 June. Last day of class and the full-semester withdraw deadline share 14 June. Exam preparation is 15 June. Finals are 16–17 June.

Summer 2027 begins 21 June after orientation on 19 June. Add/drop is 28 June. Independence Day is observed 5 July. Pioneer Day is observed 23 July. Summer term withdraw is 27 July. Last day of class is 9 August. Exam preparation is 10 August. Finals are 11–12 August.

Fall 2026 start: 2 September 2026. Winter 2027 start: 6 January 2027. Spring 2027 start: 27 April 2027. Summer 2027 start: 21 June 2027. Count the first day of class, not the first day you parked. Orientation is a calendar event. It is not a credit hour.

Deadlines on the registrar’s table begin at the assigned time for priority registration and run through add/drop. Missing add/drop is not the same as missing withdraw. After add/drop, leaving a course is a withdraw, with its own date, not a silent drop.
