How it works

There is no single “Buddhist holidays” Monday that every country prints in red. Theravada, Mahayana, and Vajrayana communities keep overlapping lists with different names and different full moons. A temple in Bangkok, a temple in Tokyo, and a temple in Dharamshala can mark the Buddha’s life on different Gregorian dates in the same year and each be keeping its own rite correctly.

Vesak — also called Vesākha, Buddha Purnima, Buddha Jayanti, or Buddha Day — is the feast most often asked about in English. In many Theravada countries it commemorates the birth, enlightenment, and passing of the Buddha on the full moon of the lunar month Vesākha. The United Nations has observed the Day of Vesak at its offices since a General Assembly resolution in 1999. That UN nod does not freeze one Tuesday for every sangha. In 2026 civil listings already split: late April in some places, 1 May in some, late May in others, including 31 May in Thailand’s Visakha Puja listing.

Because the moon moves, copying last year’s date is a good way to arrive on an ordinary Wednesday. The honest method is to read the calendar of the community you will actually sit with, then the public-holiday list of the country you will actually stand in.

Named days that move with the moon

Other repeating days sit beside Vesak. Māgha Pūjā (Makha Bucha) marks a gathering of disciples and falls on a full moon in the third lunar month in Southeast Asian Theravada calendars. Asalha Puja (Dharma Day) marks the first sermon and sits near the start of the rains retreat, Vassa. Kathina follows the retreat. Bodhi Day, often 8 December in many Mahayana communities, marks enlightenment on a fixed civil date in those lineages. Losar, the Tibetan new year, moves. Saga Dawa is a Tibetan month, not a single imported Monday.

Losar and Saga Dawa: Tibetan dates that do not copy Thailand’s grid. Some of these days are public holidays in some states and ordinary workdays in others. Thailand, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, and several other countries give civil time off for named Buddhist dates. The United States does not close federal offices for Vesak. A local temple in an American city may still keep the lunar day with lights, precepts, and dana.

If two temples name two different Tuesdays, do not pick a winner by volume. Ask which lineage you are standing in, then read that moon.

Civil calendars still differ

A public holiday is a government decision. A holy day is a community decision. They overlap when a state writes the full moon into labor law. They diverge when you live in a country that never did. Travel plans need the civil list: trains, banks, and school gates follow the state. Practice needs the temple list: precepts, lanterns, and meal rules follow the sangha.

Do not treat Chinese National Day on 1 October as a Buddhist feast. Do not treat a school “mindfulness Monday” as Vesak. Do not treat the Japanese spring Golden Week cluster as Buddha’s birthday; Japan marks the Buddha’s birth on 8 April in many communities, as Hana Matsuri, on a fixed civil date. Copy the name of the day and the name of the country before you copy a number.
