Black history month

How it works

The month is a named span on the civil calendar, not a single Monday. In the United States it fills February: in 2026 that is 1 February through 28 February. Canada also uses February. The United Kingdom uses October. Ireland also marks October. The same idea — a month set aside to study and honour Black history — sits on different civil months depending on the country. A poster from the U.S. will not tell you the UK dates.

Carter G. Woodson and the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History launched Negro History Week in February 1926. Woodson placed that week in February because the month already held Abraham Lincoln's birthday on 12 February and the day Frederick Douglass chose to celebrate his birth. In 1976, during the U.S. bicentennial, the week was observed as a month, and President Gerald Ford issued a message for Black History Month. Congress later designated February as the national month. The United Kingdom's first official observance is dated 1987, in October.

How it works in practice: schools, libraries, museums, churches, and workplaces run talks, exhibits, and readings during that month. Federal banks in the U.S. do not close for the month as a whole. February still contains other dates — including, in the U.S., Presidents' Day on the third Monday. Black History Month does not replace those dates and they do not replace the month.

People, not a poster of three names

Black History Month people are not an official roster of ten. Any short list is a door, not a census. Woodson himself belongs on a page about the month because he built the week. Beyond that, households and classrooms name people whose work they are actually reading: Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, Ida B. Wells, Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Mary McLeod Bethune, Madam C. J. Walker, Zora Neale Hurston, James Baldwin, Maya Angelou, and many others living and dead, in the United States and beyond it. A month that only repeats three photographs has already shrunk the assignment Woodson wrote.

Read a speech, a book, a court opinion, or a local history, not only a caption. The people are not mascots of February. They are the reason the month exists as a correction to a curriculum that had left them out.

United States: February. Canada: February. United Kingdom: October. A week came first, in February 1926; the U.S. month is dated from 1976.

Quotes, and Black women's history

Black History Month quotes are lines people share from speeches, letters, and books. A quote on a graphic is not the speech. If you post King's “injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere,” you still have not read the Birmingham jail letter. If you post a line from Douglass or Angelou, name the work. Do not invent a proverb and pin it on February. Do not treat a caption as a source.

Black women's history month is not a separate U.S. federal month. Women's History Month in the United States is March. Searches mash the two because Black women's history sits in both: in February's Black History Month and in March's Women's History Month, and in the rest of the year. Dorothy Height, Fannie Lou Hamer, Ella Baker, Shirley Chisholm, Toni Morrison, and others are not confined to either label. If a calendar offered you only one week for Black women, the calendar would be repeating the problem the months were meant to fix.

Use the month your country actually marks: February in the U.S. and Canada, October in the UK. Name people as authors and actors of history, not as a quiz of three faces. If you share a quote, keep the attribution and read past the sentence.

Do not wait for a special month to read Black women, and do not invent a fourth official month to excuse the wait. A month is a reminder with a name. It is not a licence to ignore the same history in the other eleven.

If you needed a closed bank, this is the wrong observance. If you needed a date range, you now have February or October by country. If you needed people and quotes, you need a reading list, not a countdown clock. The month is the container. The work is the contents.
